*Chapter Ten* Love, My Angel on Silver Lines

Benji unlocks the door to his apartment. He knows his mom is filling in for someone and is working nights tonight at the hospital and wont be home until the morning. She won’t mind if Joel stays.

The tears rarely stopped flowing from Joel’s eyes and all Benji could do is watch. They were both on Benji’s bed now and it made his stomache knot to see Joel constantly fall apart. The silence between them is almost as sickening, neither of them really knowing what to say.

“Talk,” Benji says, not demanding it but almost begging for it.

“What do you want me to say?” Joel asks quietly keeping his focus on his hands in his lap.

“I don’t know. Something. Anything.”

Joel turns his head to look at Benji. He almost lets the awkward silence set back in before speaking again, “I liked it when you held me at the park,” All emotions wash from Benji’s face as he just stares blankly at Joel. This makes Joel tense up, “I’m sorry. I know it’s not your thing. I don’t know… never mind forget it,”

Benji shakes his head, “No, tell me what you were going to say,”

Joel takes a deep breath trying not to get worked up again, “It just felt I don’t know, right I guess. I just calmed down because no one’s ever done that to me. I mean besides my mom or Sarah. No one else has comforted me after my dad does something. And just for you to hug me and tell me it’s all okay, that you’re there for me,” Joel’s voice began to waver and he knew he wasn’t going to last, “It just meant so much that’s all,” He shakes his head as choked sobs escape.

Benji wraps his arms around Joel’s shoulders tugging his body toward him, “And I meant it. I can’t believe no one outside of your family has been there for you,” The words spill from Benji’s lips without him thinking first and sometimes it proves to be a good thing, “Just stop crying and tell me why your always so afraid of your father,” He says resting his chin on top of Joel’s head.

Joel rotates his body in Benji’s arms to get comfortable; he rests his head on Benji’s shoulder lazily wrapping his arms around Benji. His heart is thumping so hard against his chest that he is sure Benji can feel it. He didn’t know what to do. Cave in and tell Benji now? Or just do what he’s done all his life and just keep it all bottled up inside of him.

“I don’t know Benji,” Joel sighs.

“Joel… it’s just going to make things better if you tell me,” Benji tells him. Joel knows he’s right too. Still even being right has little affect on his decision.

“I just don’t want to bring you down with me,” Joel hates it when people worry about him. He’s fine. He’s still alive. He manages.

Benji nudges Joel to sit up. He cups the side of Joel’s face in his hand and wipes the tears from Joel’s cheek with his thumb. Joel leans into the touch, his eyes closing slightly.

“I don’t care. Tell me.”

Joel sighs, “I can’t Benji. Not now. Some other time,” He says pressing his face into the crook of Benji’s neck.

Benji groans because of Joel’s difficultly but won’t pressure Joel into telling him. He’s had a long day.

“Do you want to lie down and go to bed then?” He asks after a few quiet minutes.

Joel nods sitting back up, “Where will you sleep?”

Benji thought about the couch because his bed is no where near the size of Joel’s but then he remembers last night when Joel begged him to stay.

“Right here we’ll manage. Stand up,”

Joel does as Benji pulls back the bed covers. There is a pause in his movement and Joel realizes he wants him to get into the bed. He crawls in soon followed by Benji. Once they are both comfortable Benji pulls the covers over them saying goodnight.

Joel curls into Benji’s body, his arm flopping across Benji’s chest, “You know what?”

“What?”

Joel sighs, “I felt something I haven’t in the longest time,” He pauses wishing for Benji to answer but when he doesn’t Joel continues, “It felt like someone cared about me when they weren’t required to. Like why the hell would you even give me to seconds of your thought or time today? I don’t get it. I just really don’t.”

Benji lays in silence thinking about what he is going to say. He really can’t put his finger on exactly why he cares about Joel. It’s just something about him that makes Benji stop and care. “I just do. I don’t get it either. Why does it matter though? Is it a bad thing?” Benji rolls onto his side so he is looking at Joel. There is another thing. He’d never let any other guy even remotely close to him when he’s sleeping but for some reason Joel doesn’t fit into that category either. There is just something about him and Benji can’t put his finger on it and it is scaring him.

“No. No not at all. It just feels weird. Like I actually feel loved for the first time in my life,”

Benji’s heart begins to ache as he realizes what Joel just said, “I do love you Joel,” He wraps his arms around Joel pulling him as close as possible. He buries his head into Joel’s chest, inhaling his scent. He feels Joel is ready to talk again but he gets the first word in, “Don’t say anything else. Not tonight. We’ll talk in the morning. Now it’s time to sleep,”

*Chapter Eleven* A Past Revealed

When Robin gets home in the morning the first thing she sees is the fact that Benji’s bedroom door is shut. He must be home and maybe he’s ready to talk. She pushes the door open her heart jumping into her throat as her brain comprehends what she is seeing. Her two sons, her twins, asleep in the same bed. Tears prick at her eyes at the sight alone and she is tempted to wake them up and tell them they are twins. She knows she cant though.

To Benji Joel is dead. Even at six, one year after they were separated, Benji, or should I say Benny, had fallen into depression. Benny would start lashing out demanding to see Joel. Robin could never answer his agonizing pleas because she never knew where Roger and Joel were. When she couldn’t take it anymore she just told him Joel had died. Benny went cold and turned into Benji, because it sounded tougher. He yelled and hit anyone who called him Benny no matter who it was, Josh, mom, or even Grandma who had been fighting cancer at the time. He was Benji now, not Benny. Joel had called him Benny and now there was no more Joel. Benny died with Joel. Years passed and Benji locked all thoughts of Joel away in his mind never to be thought of again. Now not even the real thing could spark them.

Robin quietly closed her sons room before making her way to her own. She hated her decision to tell Benji Joel was dead now. She would be kicking herself all day about it now…
