Weird accents

I've noticed this weird accent some people have here in Northern Virginia. I've never heard this before in the other states I've lived in, and I've heard a lot of different accents. The first time I heard it, I thought it was just how this girl talked, then I heard another girl pronounce these words funny, and then another girl.

It's the "awl" phenomenon. Words like saw, bra, raw, become sawl, brawl, rawl.

This is even weirder than east coasters leaving off the r in car (cah), park (pahk), deer (dee-uh), just to add it to words that don't have an r: Leesa (Leeser), idea (ideer), tequila (tequiler).

Has anyone else heard the "awl" phenomenon anywhere else? And if so, was this person from Northern Virginia? I don't think it's quite something attributable to a southern accent.
