Why does anything concerning Peter Pan make me cry? I mean, it's like some kind of switch that goes off in my brain. I watched Finding Neverland yesterday (don't laugh, ok, I like Kate Winslet and I like Peter Pan) and sniffed back tears the ENTIRE movie.
I am the Julienne Moore of Peter Pan (i like to call her the "waterworks of hollywood.")
In unrelated news, I was babysitting for my boss's son on Friday night. His name is Hayden, he is four. He was playing a computer game and turns to me and goes:
it makes me uncomfortable that you have short hair because girls have long hair and boys have short hair.
Me: But your mom has short hair
Hayden: No she doesn't.
Me: My mom has short hair.
Hayden: but your hair makes me feel funny.
Me: Well, I know boys who have long hair.
Hayden: (silence)
Me: (not sure where else to go) well, hayden, if someday you want to have long hair you'll still be a boy.
Hayden: (returns to video game)
What exactly what I supposed to do in that conversation?
It's also (given this kid) a distinct possibility that he was less upset over my gender expression and more just cranky that someone else in the room had the same haircut as him. He likes to get the attention.
However, this combined with all my Troupes kids' reactions whenever I cut my hair is making me realize that I'm apparently far more radical and bizarre-looking to people than I think I am.
Boo yah?
