All things considered, Jenny supposed she ought to have been prepared for this. In the three weeks or so it had been since the first snowfall, she'd been growing increasingly unhappy and she knew it, but that was nothing compared to the way she felt when she woke up on Christmas morning and it really sank in that she would be spending the holiday without her family for the second year in a row. She and Dan had managed a sort of truce for the holidays last year, but he'd been around for so short a time after that that it barely counted; it had only made losing him that much harder. Now, with him not here for real and Vanessa gone, too, there really was nowhere else to go. It wasn't like she fit in well enough with the Upper East Siders, no matter how different things were here than back home, and Wendy was practically a sister but that still wasn't quite the same.

So she'd acted almost entirely on a whim, throwing on a coat and heading out into the snow, barely realizing where she was headed until she was already there. If she couldn't have her real family, she could have the next best thing. Christmas just wasn't meant to be spent alone. Blowing on ungloved hands first, she knocked on Daphne's door, it occurring to her only a moment later that maybe she shouldn't have shown up all uninvited like this. Daphne probably had her own plans. Still, it was too late to turn around and leave, and she wasn't sure she would have even if she could. At the very least, it was worth a try.

matt, weirdest/best fake family ever, daphne, christmas
