small Callums - more ideas about the second generation of Swallows and Amazons

I think Dick Callum and Titty Walker marry in 1941 - probably rather late in 1941. Given the situation at the time, and that they are both involved in making Secret Stuff somewhere in Hertfordshire, they didn't plan to start a family immediately - and don't. By the beginning of 1944 though, they are definitely of the opinion that small Callums would be a good thing and by the end of 1945 Titty at least is getting rather worried about their non- appearance. Dick is appointed as the warden of a hall of residence at Leeds University. (This fictional hall occupies most of one side of Lyddon Terrace. Ellerslie Hall (an all-female hall) occupies the other. I'm not sure if Ellerslie was a Hall in 1946 in reality, but it is in my alternative world. The Callums make very good wardens, both being very patient. Dick continued to pursue research in Chemistry and is a rather good lecturer too. Edward Richard Callum is born in September 1946 and Rosemary Helen Callum in March 1949.

I was slightly surprised with Edward's ability to scene-steal when I put him in fiction! I was expecting it from Nancy's daughters of course, and from Susie Brading, but was slightly surprised how much Edward had to say for himself. Being intelligent, sympathetic and keen to please, it was a while before anyone noticed that he wasn't really quite as interested in all the science stuff his father did with him, and all the engines his Uncle Roger invited him to help with as his sister was.

It is Rosie Callum who has become a molecular biologist (also a keen amateur astronomer). Edward was far more secretive about his early writing than his aunt was about hers, and was twenty two before anyone but his parents knew he had had some of his poetry published. He was nearly fifty and both his children were at university before he felt he was in a position to try to make a career of writing.

The suggestion of making Titty and Dick's son the poet and their daughter a scientist came from amazon ahoy and then my imagination does what it usually did and ran away with everything.

fannish nonsense
