I'm homesick
Took off to run around the library for a little while - haven't done that in forever - simply exploring while I think. And I was struck by how much I suddenly felt transported back to Nielson, or Bass Hall SciLi. I touched the shelf and I was home again, instead of on the other side of the planet.
So now I have to admit I'm pretty damn homesick, which is fucking infuriating because I've still got a month left (a fourth of which easily filled with useless finals) with so many things I still want to do, still need to do, and don't want to deal with anymore. I can categorize examples:
Want:
- Scuba dive. There's a place in Tokyo I'm gonna check out, but I have the sinking feeling this won't happen
- buy more books before I leave (oh god money w(>A<)w)
- to try more foods
- See Tokyo Tower
Need:
- to ship shit home. (Apparently even if I use the sea route, it's upwards of 50 bucks. Considering global communication tech, why is international mailing still so expensive?)
- arrange to get my luggage to the airport (For some reason, CIEE doesn't cover this. What the hell.)
- make sure I've got souvenirs for everybody
Am Sick Of:
- getting nagged about my table manners
- getting nagged about how I do everything slowly
- the humidity and lack of air conditioning
- the fucking hour commute in said humidity
- trying to explain something in Japanese only to have Kaa-san snap, "Use English!"
- being treated like a tenant instead of a family member. If I'd wanted that shit I WOULD HAVE GONE WITH MY FIRST INSTINCT AND GONE TO THE DORMS. AT LEAST THEY HAVE INTERNET
I really, really hate feeling this bitter. I do. And it's not all justified, it's a combination of culture shock and PMS and my own damn belligerence brought on by critique of my character. And Mom's right that my frustrations with my host situation is coloring my view of my experience here, and I'm gonna look back on this with regret. I wish it were easier to then take her advice of being as good as possible in spite of it. I'm not Japanese, I don't swallow my pride and stay quiet, I'm a petty, passive-aggressive brat. And I wish I'd gotten sick of this a month ago so I could have lived on my own.
And it's not even always bad. She's a nice woman, just very old-fashioned and inconsistent (I'd probably go this nuts living with my own grandmothers). I guess I just remember the slights more than the treats. Last night wasn't bad. Out of the blue she asked about my family, whether I had siblings, what my parents did for a living. Went well, bilingually, though I kinda slammed it into a brick wall when I went into how my Mother's MS prevented her from having any more kids. Good job. But I think then we moved on and talked a bit about her family, which has seven kids. It was fine. She's also nagging less often about taking more than 15 minutes in the shower, though mornings are still aggravating.
Maybe I'm jealous. Whenever I talk to classmates about their host families, their kaa-sans are so sweet and take care of them when they're sick, the kids are cute, they go out on trips together. Kaa-san stays at the house. When she occasionally does go out, it's none of my business where. The only interaction we have is over dinner, with her her correcting my posture and hand placement and telling me that this is eaten together with rice, while that is not. It might partly be my fault, as I spend all my time at the school or with friends, but... geez.
My initial plan, when I first applied to CIEE, was to go to the dorms. But I was convinced to do a homestay because I'd learn more Japanese, and have a better idea of life in Japan. Well, Yes and No. Kaa-san is trying to teach me more than the language (she says, during every 'manner' rant), but we barely speak any Japanese longer than a phrase or two. Please fucking excuse me if I don't register what you said, and when I ask you to please repeat it, DON'T JUST SAY IT IN ENGLISH. I am trying to learn, I really am. And STOP CUTTING ME OFF WHENEVER IT TAKES MORE THAN 10 SECONDS FOR ME TO STRING A SENTENCE TOGETHER.
So no, I'm not learning more Japanese this way. And the stupidest thing is that ironically, one of the dorms is chock full of native students. FML
And on the Japanese home thing, yeah, fine, it's Japanese, but it's not... not a family here. It's an elder widow letting a foreign kid and her grandson use the extra rooms in her home. I feel like I'm getting nothing out of this.
So, what else. Oh, money. Money is a problem. I think I'm gonna tell my folks to take my credit card away from me this fall. At least until I've found a job on campus or manage to sell some of the stuff I've accumulated. Maybe then I can feel a little better about this trip.
Maybe this is karma for a relatively wealthy and spend-happy childhood?
And time. The constant enemy. Classes will be eating away at the majority of it (such as now when I should be finishing up an essay due last week, as well as printing out homework for tomorrow), and to top it off I've signed up for the bitter nakano exchange. Does it help that reading their stuff is one of the things that always, always cheers me up here?

Yet it's not finished because I can't decide how to place who in which role. I want Shisui as Captain, but not Itachi as Inara, and Kakashi has the better parallel for the embittered war veteran trying to make his-- oh wait, that could also be Itachi; I think he'd like that better than the Simon role (and Sasuke as River Tam is something I shouldn't be contemplating. At all. Too much implausible backstory). On the other hand, Itachi would have supported Unification X( Maybe he would make a decent Inara. Just... not a dress. Dear self, don't put him in a dress. Maybe not even a entertainer, but the son of some political higher up who wrangled a spot on his distant relative's ship as "a cultural excursion" or something, dragging little brother along for the ride (little brother then comes down with a case of Clingy Nakama).
But then I have the issue of Akatsuki and their role, as the Alliance would be more the Hidden Village system. Ah, screw it. Borrow elements from Outlaw Star instead - the Government (Hidden Village system), the Pirates (Akatsuki), and those who've said 'fuck this noise, I'm living my way' (Naruto, Hinata, Sakura, Sasuke, Itachi, Shisui, probably Kakashi, who'm I missing)

So now I have to admit I'm pretty damn homesick, which is fucking infuriating because I've still got a month left (a fourth of which easily filled with useless finals) with so many things I still want to do, still need to do, and don't want to deal with anymore. I can categorize examples:
Want:
- Scuba dive. There's a place in Tokyo I'm gonna check out, but I have the sinking feeling this won't happen
- buy more books before I leave (oh god money w(>A<)w)
- to try more foods
- See Tokyo Tower
Need:
- to ship shit home. (Apparently even if I use the sea route, it's upwards of 50 bucks. Considering global communication tech, why is international mailing still so expensive?)
- arrange to get my luggage to the airport (For some reason, CIEE doesn't cover this. What the hell.)
- make sure I've got souvenirs for everybody
Am Sick Of:
- getting nagged about my table manners
- getting nagged about how I do everything slowly
- the humidity and lack of air conditioning
- the fucking hour commute in said humidity
- trying to explain something in Japanese only to have Kaa-san snap, "Use English!"
- being treated like a tenant instead of a family member. If I'd wanted that shit I WOULD HAVE GONE WITH MY FIRST INSTINCT AND GONE TO THE DORMS. AT LEAST THEY HAVE INTERNET
I really, really hate feeling this bitter. I do. And it's not all justified, it's a combination of culture shock and PMS and my own damn belligerence brought on by critique of my character. And Mom's right that my frustrations with my host situation is coloring my view of my experience here, and I'm gonna look back on this with regret. I wish it were easier to then take her advice of being as good as possible in spite of it. I'm not Japanese, I don't swallow my pride and stay quiet, I'm a petty, passive-aggressive brat. And I wish I'd gotten sick of this a month ago so I could have lived on my own.
And it's not even always bad. She's a nice woman, just very old-fashioned and inconsistent (I'd probably go this nuts living with my own grandmothers). I guess I just remember the slights more than the treats. Last night wasn't bad. Out of the blue she asked about my family, whether I had siblings, what my parents did for a living. Went well, bilingually, though I kinda slammed it into a brick wall when I went into how my Mother's MS prevented her from having any more kids. Good job. But I think then we moved on and talked a bit about her family, which has seven kids. It was fine. She's also nagging less often about taking more than 15 minutes in the shower, though mornings are still aggravating.
Maybe I'm jealous. Whenever I talk to classmates about their host families, their kaa-sans are so sweet and take care of them when they're sick, the kids are cute, they go out on trips together. Kaa-san stays at the house. When she occasionally does go out, it's none of my business where. The only interaction we have is over dinner, with her her correcting my posture and hand placement and telling me that this is eaten together with rice, while that is not. It might partly be my fault, as I spend all my time at the school or with friends, but... geez.
My initial plan, when I first applied to CIEE, was to go to the dorms. But I was convinced to do a homestay because I'd learn more Japanese, and have a better idea of life in Japan. Well, Yes and No. Kaa-san is trying to teach me more than the language (she says, during every 'manner' rant), but we barely speak any Japanese longer than a phrase or two. Please fucking excuse me if I don't register what you said, and when I ask you to please repeat it, DON'T JUST SAY IT IN ENGLISH. I am trying to learn, I really am. And STOP CUTTING ME OFF WHENEVER IT TAKES MORE THAN 10 SECONDS FOR ME TO STRING A SENTENCE TOGETHER.
So no, I'm not learning more Japanese this way. And the stupidest thing is that ironically, one of the dorms is chock full of native students. FML
And on the Japanese home thing, yeah, fine, it's Japanese, but it's not... not a family here. It's an elder widow letting a foreign kid and her grandson use the extra rooms in her home. I feel like I'm getting nothing out of this.
So, what else. Oh, money. Money is a problem. I think I'm gonna tell my folks to take my credit card away from me this fall. At least until I've found a job on campus or manage to sell some of the stuff I've accumulated. Maybe then I can feel a little better about this trip.
Maybe this is karma for a relatively wealthy and spend-happy childhood?
And time. The constant enemy. Classes will be eating away at the majority of it (such as now when I should be finishing up an essay due last week, as well as printing out homework for tomorrow), and to top it off I've signed up for the bitter nakano exchange. Does it help that reading their stuff is one of the things that always, always cheers me up here?

I want Shisui as Captain, but not Itachi as Inara, and Kakashi has the better parallel for the embittered war veteran trying to make his-- oh wait, that could also be Itachi; I think he'd like that better than the Simon role (and Sasuke as River Tam is something I shouldn't be contemplating. At all. Too much implausible backstory). On the other hand, Itachi would have supported Unification X( Maybe he would make a decent Inara. Just... not a dress. Dear self, don't put him in a dress. Maybe not even a entertainer, but the son of some political higher up who wrangled a spot on his distant relative's ship as "a cultural excursion" or something, dragging little brother along for the ride (little brother then comes down with a case of Clingy Nakama).
But then I have the issue of Akatsuki and their role, as the Alliance would be more the Hidden Village system. Ah, screw it. Borrow elements from Outlaw Star instead - the Government (Hidden Village system), the Pirates (Akatsuki), and those who've said 'fuck this noise, I'm living my way' (Naruto, Hinata, Sakura, Sasuke, Itachi, Shisui, probably Kakashi, who'm I missing)
