High school Meme: Gacked from
j_rosestar What year was it?
I started in 1991 and finished in 1998, all those years ago :)
What were your three favorite bands or musical artists?
I went through phases of liking artists or songs but pretty much like now, I never really latched onto any one group or singer. I went through an Alanis Morrisette pase, also No Doubt, but mostly just chart music of the time.
What were your favorite clothes?
We had a uniform at our school so clothes were resigned to weekends. I didn't have much style back in the day and couldn't really spend much on clothes so a lot of second hand clothes were involved (still like that now!) Think of the fashion about two years previous and that is what I was wearing!
What was up with your hair?
I had all kinds of hair going on then, went from short wavy hair when I was 11, through LOTS of haircuts....permed, v.v. short, long, bobbed, shoulder length. I never really experimented with colour as my natural red hair doesn't take well to hair dye. I have only ever had highlights twice in my life so I experimented with cuts/ styles rather than colour.
Who were your best friends?
I didn't really have best friends as such, I was friendly with a lot of different groups of people. I suppose, in 1st and 2nd year i had a few closer friends but I guess (sub-consciously) I was less friendly with girls after I realised I was gay. I know that sounds weird but I think I found it harder to be friends with girls because of my feelings and also being in a strict Catholic Grammar school I was scared of the repercussions if anyone found out about me. I preferred the company of boys but I couldn't join in on the conversations I wanted to (about girls, etc) so I emded up being best friends with one guy who knew I was gay, yet I ended up going out with him for nearly a year. Looking back, I can almost reconcile that it was really only a progression of our several very close years of friendship. I never rule out that I would end up with a guy, though I consider myself gay. Phew...that was a long (perhaps unnecessary) answer.
Where did you work?
I worked in several jobs through school. In my first year, I was 11, I worked as a dishwasher in a local restaurant...horrible job but the people were nice. From 15 until I left school at 18 I worked in a chinese restaurant...it was hard work and every weekend but I made good friends and it was good experience for further jobs. Throughout my last four years at school I did a lot of voluntary work at the youth centre my mum managed. I worked in the month long summer schemes every summer, I also did circus workshops, Arts and Crafts courses, after schools clubs and that is also where I first learned to face paint...so that was a great experience for me. I did most of it because I wanted to be a teacher but I dropped out of a teaching degree after one week of Uni!!
What did you do after school?
Watched a LOT of TV...obsessed with X-files, Babylon 5, Quantum Leap...the guy I was friends with loved Sci-fi so we watched a lot of that stuff. It also meant I could ogle Gillian Anderson who was one of my biggest crushes at that time.
Did you take the bus?
Unfortunately yes. In first and second year I had to get two buses...one public bus for half hour then a school one for another half hour. I left the house around 7.50am but didn't start class until 9.20am! Then from third year onwards I got one school bus that took about half hour. Never learnt to drive until I was 18 and have never driven since I passed my test (hate it and am too cautious about it!!)
Who did you have a crush on?
My form teacher...major obsession is more like it. Was 'in love' with her for most of my time at high school. She was a Religious Education teacher in a strict Catholic school...it was a hard thing to deal with!! Later in school I fell for the deputy head girl who was the year above me...this was also around the time I was going out with my male best friend...that caused a lot of problems. It kinda messed up both our heads!
Did you fight with your parents?
My mum and I were close until I hit puberty and I fought with her for no reason. She married my step-dad when I was 14 so that was a catalyst for a lot of stuff in the house. I actually could talk to him a lot easier than my mum as he wasn't as close (if that makes sense) Also, all the stuff I was dealing with in terms of my sexuality caused tension, as my mum found a lot of it hard to deal with and I was being a typical teenager and not seeing it from her point of view. It cause a lot of arguments.
Who did you have a CELEBRITY crush on?
Gillian Anderson, Claudia Christian, Teri Hatcher, Gaby Roslin and more that I can't remember right now.
Did you smoke cigarettes?
No way! Hated that my mum smoked like a chimney and none of my friends did so I never really had the pressure to try. My mum made me try it once so I would cough up a lung, she hoped that would put me off. It did, I also can't inhale it properly so that stopped me too.
Did you lug all of your books around in your backpack because you were too nervous to find your locker?
I had a locker, knew where it was but it was minute and when I had 12 different subjects which averaged about 3 books each, it was easier to bring them all with you rather than try to remember which ones you needed. I also had to follow fashion and only wear one strap of my backpack on my shoulder so I blame all that heavy lifting for my recurring shoulder and back pain.
Did you have a 'clique'?
Not one of my own but I was a drifter who floated from group to group. I had friends in all of the different cliques...cool kids, nerds, dossers....etc.
Did you have "The Max" like Zach, Kelly and Slater?
Is that the cafe?? If so, then no, as our school was strict and we weren't allowed off grounds except for arriving and leaving and the rubbish common room had nothing but an old pool table and only enough seating for about a third of the students! There were nearly 200 students in my year and around 150 in each of the other 6 years. The common room was supposed to hold about 350 pupils...it barely held 150.
Admit it, were you popular?
Nope, definitely not. I was only remembered for having red hair, being a swot and the persistent rumours about my sexuality. I was apparently having an affair with the teacher I liked (I wish!) while going out with my boyfriend. However, the rumours were always circulating without anyone really knowing who I was. I was more well known amongst the teachers because I was a swot, teachers pet, never got in trouble and tried to engage teachers in conversation as I was 13 going on 40....always pompously felt I was above all my fellow teenagers! How stuck up of me!
Who did you want to be just like?
The teacher that I liked. I thought she had it all sorted out....confident, beautiful, well dressed...etc. Yet, I wanted to go out with women so I couldn't have wanted to be just like her (now married with 2 or 3 children!)
What did you want to be when you grew up?
For years I wanted to be an architect, from about 7 until I was about 13. When I realsied the mathematics involved I grew out of that idea quickly! Then from about 14 onwards I wanted to be a primary school teacher..not only because of the teacher I liked but I thought a vocational job would be easier to achieve (university wise) and would be good for the long term. How off the mark was I??
Where did you think you'd be at the age you are now?
I never imagined myself married or with kids but I also would never have imagined myself as I am now. The only things I thought were that I would be finshed Uni and have a great job and lots of friends and someone to love. Even though Uni wasn't the best and my job is pretty crap with no prospects and I'm constantly skint I have the most amazing woman who loves me as much as I love her and we have our own home, I have good friends and both of our families are happy and healthy so I'm more than happy with my lot in life (even if I moan about all the crap!!)
And to round off this meme....for all to laugh at her are some pics of me during my school years...check them out:
Me aged about 12/13 in my hideous uniform...that tie was a flippin nightmare:
Me, aged 13, the book nerd with the huge specs...so not a good look:
Me, aged 14/15 as chief (and only) bridesmaid at my mums wedding:
Me, aged 16, in my passport photo, were, according to my Art teacher, I "looked like a terrorist":
Me, aged 17, at my school formal (prom) beside the teacher I 'loved' (sorry can't put her on here too) My dress cost only £6.50 and was from a second hand shop. I loved it and it was definitely cheaper than my friends...she spent over £200 getting hers made and she looked the smae as about half of the girls there. Mine was short, everyone else's was long and I wore a big black fluffy coat over it. I don't think I really even knew what a formal was supposed to be like.
Me, aged 18, as an elf in the grotto of the local shopping centre, I have had some weird jobs in my time...this was particularly hard work...screaming escited kids just before Christmas, v.v.v. long queues, irate parents and a really hot (temperature) grotto does not a pleasant time make!! At least the money was good!
Don't I look nearly the same age in all my pics? I fear I might look about 15 for the rest of my life!
V. long post overI Yippee I hear you shout!! Return to the real world with more useless information about me!
