Steamboy is opening at
the Nuart in West Los Angeles tonight.
The latest animated feature from famed writer/director Katsuhiro Ôtomo (Akira) is a retro science fiction epic set in Victorian England. A young inventor prodigy named Ra Stim (Ray Steam) receives a mysterious metal ball containing a new form of energy capable of powering an entire nation. The boy must use it to fight evil, redeem his family, and save London from destruction. The lush Victorian interiors and the elegance of the era's mechanical design allow Ôtomo to create dazzling visual backgrounds and machines. The most expensive Japanese animated film ever made!
It's the latest feature from the director of Akira, Katsuhiro Ôtomo. Akira was one of the first ground breaking animes to break here in the States. I remember the first time I saw a video of Akira, in 1994, and I was just stunned. I never knew how amazing animation could look! I never knew the story lines could be so intense! Instantly I was hooked and I've been watching anime ever since. It's screening in the original Japanese with English subtitles for only a limited time. I'm definitely not going to miss my chance to see his work up on the big screen.

I'm looking out the window from the lab, and the sky is heavy with rain. It looks like the sky is about to pour again... I don't have an umbrella today.
