L'shana Tova everyone!
OK, so I'm a few days late in terms of Rosh Hashanah. But I still want to wish you all a good upcoming year, especially in terms of school.
Speaking of school, I'm really turning my study habits around this semester. I've kept up with every single reading assignment so far - a first for me, I rarely read my textbooks... but since I pay $300+ on books every semester, I should probably open them now and then, right? Right. Amazingly, reading has really helped me understand the material that we go over in lecture. What a concept haha. I've been doing my stats homework early so that I can go over it with my TA before I hand it in. I'm starting to participate more, even in my lecture with about 280 students. Looking at my overall college GPA really upsets me (a 3.28! blech!). It dropped from a 3.4 as soon as I got my AA degree, because once you finish the General Studies Program, those grades don't count towards your cumulative GPA anymore. I got A's in pretty much all of my GSP classes, so having those go away really hurt my GPA. I'm going to work my ass off to make the Dean's List this semester (meaning a 3.5 or higher) to correct my mistakes from last year. AH. Wish me luck!
Everything else in my world is going great. Been keeping myself busy as per usual... school, work, bit of beer pong (Lovett's dorm had a random door laying in the middle of their common room, so they turned it into a pong table...pretty bitchin), sake bars, movies (go see Across the Universe!) etc.
The ever-so-awesome San Genaro Feast is going on in Little Italy right now, so we hit that up this weekend. The Feast is this huge street fair that goes on every year around this time, its all food and music and games and drinking and Italian pride. I've gone every year since I've arrived at NYU. Anyways, Liz and I went on Saturday and we met up with some of our friends from frosh year (Ben, Dinesh, Liz H, Emily and Christine). It was fun to see them all again, we didn't really hang out all that much last year so yay. We ate ourselves silly. We had hoped to have them all over to our place after the feast, but that kinda fell through. It sucks - I don't have a lot of friends here in the first place, so when stuff doesn't work out it really upsets me. Liz, Tassia and I ended up having a girls night at our place, watching re-runs of America's Next Top Model and decorating our common room. Hooray!
Lawrence is here for a week! WOOO! I love visitors! I didn't get to see him over the summer because he stayed in LA, so I'm really glad that he's here now. He's bouncing around from friend to friend, so I think he's gonna stay with me for a night or two at some point this week. Liz and I went to go meet up with him at Webster Hall on Saturday to go see GirlTalk, but the two of us didn't have tickets so we couldn't get in. Grumble grumble. I hate getting all dressed up for no reason lol. Anyways, I ended up meeting up with Lawrence and his friends yesterday in Soho for shopping and food. Much fun.
I got my Monroe situation all sorted out. I found this shop through citysearch that had excellent reviews, so I went there on Friday to have them take a look at it. Tita, the piercer there, took one look at it and said it had to come out immidiatly, because it was starting to get embedded into my skin. Ew. She and Kevin, the jewelry designer, really took care of me and were super accomodating. They numbed the area for me so that I wouldn't be in any discomfort while they were working (for the record: Kevin was able to remove it without the aid of wirecutters, so THERE!) and once it was out they custom fit a piece of jewelry for me. Kevin makes some of the most beautiful jewelry I've ever seen... he fit me with a bead that was made from REAL sapphires and diamonds. The price? Roughly $600 for a teeny tiny Monroe gem ("I know you probably can't afford this, but look how fierce this is on you!!"). Maybe one day I can have some bling, but for now I'll stick with the cubic zirconia. They worked with me for about 2 hours to make sure that everything was in tip top shape, and in the end they didn't charge me for the labor (but I tipped hxc). They were really upset when I told them my whole Andromeda nightmare and how they were super rude to me and messed up my piercing. Tita said that incidents like that not only hurt the specific shop, but it can turn a person away from piercings in general and can hurt the reputation of the entire industry. If you ever want a piercing in New York, go to Venus Modern Body Arts. Thats where the rich and famous (and of course, that includes me too) go for all of their needs. I was super impressed with everything there.
What else?
Just found out that my winter break is a week longer this year! I'll be home for about 4-1/2 weeks in December/January as compared to 3-1/2 weeks. That also means that my spring break is in late March instead of early March, so hopefully it will overlap with either the UC's or the Cal States. I'd like to go on a trip for spring break this year... not necessarily a SPRING BREAK WOO-HOO trip, but a trip none the less. Like maybe to Amsterdam, or Canada, or even Boston or something.
I'm really looking forward to studying abroad next summer, just for the record.
Time for some Comparative Politics homework.
much love!
