**SPOILERS** The Walking Dead Carol: TV versus Comic

Dec 19, 2012 18:13

I know I just said I was getting over my Walking Dead obsession but I just feel the need to get this rant out.  Where better than on my LJ.

Warning: Spoilers for the comic.  Also be warned that I have not actually read the comics.  I am relying on accurate synopsis description from Wikipedia.  So as you all may realize, accuracy might be in question.  Would love to hear comments from anyone who actually has read the comic book.

So from what I have read, the Carol in the comic is much different than the Carol in the TV show.  They possibly may have started similar but have changed in different ways as the story has progressed.  Since I am much more familiar with the TV Carol, I'll start with her.

She came from an abusive relationship with her husband.  He obviously beat her, degraded her and even seemed to be starting towards their daughter as well.  In my eyes, this made her a meek character and I mostly ignored her in season one.  The scene when she used the pick axe on her dead husband seemed to start her on a new path away from him.  When her daughter went missing and then was found to be a walker in the barn, there was always the question about whether she might decide to check-out on life.  Yet, she didn't.  Even after Daryl basically ranted at her, saying some vry awful things to her.  She knew she was a burden and has since tried to make herself as useful as possible, even now killing walkers and trying to learn medicine from Herschel.  She has gotten stronger, more confident and comfortable with the people she is with.  I would say that she is now one of my favorite characters.

This is in contrast to the comic Carol.  That woman continued to descend into depression and she did not even lose her daughter.  Sophie never got lost and never became a walker in the comic (at least as far as Carol was there) so that was no reason for her to check out.  It seemed that in addition to her depression, she hooked up with Tyrese.  I do not know how serious this relationship was, if it was only a fling or something more.  However, she caught him getting oral sex from Michonne and that basically sent her over the edge.  She threw herself at walkers, committing suicide.  What an awful ending and not a character I would overly love because of her weakness and hate of herself.

Taking this into account and my love for Carol in the TV show, I desperately do not want her to hook up with Tyrese, even with him having been just introduced into the show.  I realize part of this probably stems from my wanting a Daryl/Carol relationship but it's not just that.  I don't want TV Carol to become comic Carol.  I want her to continue to grow and learn herself worth.  I truly believe that her relationship with Daryl has helped this.  He is not in the comic and even if you don't ship them, you cannot deny that they are close.  Closer to each other than any other characters on the show are to either of them (maybe you could agrue Lori and Carol as best friends but Lori's gone now).

Tyrese can do whatever he wants with Michonne.  Hell, maybe he can loosen her up more.  She is just SO tight, which is cool with all her fight scenes but not sure how it will work in a group dynamic.  I definitely don't want to see her with Daryl because they are a little too similar with their quiet anger.  They better not kill Daryl!

Can't wait to see the show in Feb, no matter what direction they go in.  I'll be watching!
