"redshirts" by john scalzi

the first scalzi book that i've read that isn't in the "old man's war" universe. now, how to describe it without giving away too much.

sometime in the future (he says when but i can't recall and the book is at home) people on a particular starship are dying at a much higher than normal rate. a group of them notes this pattern and sets out to find the reasons and do something about the situation.

there are parts of this book that are very funny, but as with the other scalzi books i've read, there are some hidden depths. not as many as the other scalzi books, i think, but they're there. and there are three codas or appendices or something--don't miss those, even if you don't like the first one, which i didn't. the other two are worth your time. overall, if you like science fiction as a genre both in books and in television, i think you'll enjoy this book.

reviews, books, science fiction
