cassielsander put together another one of his patented theme movie-watching experiences on saturday. the original plan was to watch "free enterprise" and then "galaxy quest." but a funny thing happened on the way to the spaceship.
the first movie went off without a hitch. two men, nearing 30, obsessed with movies and star trek and all things geeky try to navigate their friendships and romantic lives. meanwhile, they meet william shatner (played by william shatner) and he pitches a movie idea to them: a one-man musical version of "julius caesar."
first of all, i found this movie to be howl out loud funny, and at that, much more of it flew over my head than flew over cass's head. you need a somewhat functional knowledge of star trek, star wars, and other geeky things, but i know very little compared to many and i still got a hell of a lot of the jokes. and i was filled with admiration for william shatner who basically allows himself to be a send-up of himself and does it very well. one of the brilliant moments is when one of the 30-ish year olds does a spot-on imitation of shatner delivering a speech.
the narrow line that the film walks is whether you are going to loathe one or both of the protagonists. they are very selfish and self-absorbed and often not nice to each other or other people. ultimately, i did like them enough to just go along with the movie but it is a bit of a sausage-fest, be warned.
see, what happened was, i was the only person who could make it. and i've seen "galaxy quest" and of course cass had seen "galaxy quest." so when the time came, we decided to watch another movie so that at least one of us would be seeing something new. and i'd seen none of the x-men movies as of a couple of weeks ago when cass showed me the first one.
rumor is that people in the know like the second one better but i am not someone in the know--i've never seen the comic books and i had just seen the first movie and it contained all i knew of this particular world. which is to say that i liked the first one better--i liked the "this is how some of the x-men became x-men" aspects of it. but the second one is good fun until the end where you know what will happen and then you know what will happen next. the next thing that i will be shown in this series is the wolverine origin story one, and i'm looking forward to that--i think i like origin stories best in this series.
