about a year ago, my cable company sent me digital boxes that i needed to attach to my televisions to get them up and running with their new digital service. about two months after that, i picked a day to try to get them hooked up and running. i got them hooked up okay but i never did get them to work. so i've been without a functioning television for at least a year, in the sense of a television that could show me television shows--i can watch tapes and DVDs on them.
yesterday i got a note from my cable provider telling me that they had been sending me too many channels for the service that i was paying for and were going to stop doing that. which sort of brought to the forefront of my mind that i had been paying for basic cable service for a year without turning on my television to use it. it's not terribly expensive, but it is money that i'm spending on nothing. so this morning i called them and told them that if i could go without cable for a year and never notice it, i could probably go without for the foreseeable future--and i canceled it.
the customer service rep asked me what i would do with the money i saved and i said i would probably pay the plumber. so it's not an exciting windfall. on the other hand, it's sort of ridiculous that it took a note from my cable company telling me that they were going to stop providing me with the service i wasn't using to get me to stop paying for the service i wasn't using.
television,
not the sharpest knife in the drawer,
yes my life is this fascinating,
divesting stuff,
joys of homeownership
