"the siren depths" by martha wells

i love martha wells and i love the raksura books, of which this is the third. i recommend both to you very highly. that said, this was my least favorite of the three and would make a poor starting place for the series.

i hopehopehope that wells writes at least one more book about these characters because we still haven't gotten to the point where we get to see moon and jade actually fitting into raksuran society. i want a more domestic book with more about the interactions between them and the other raksura and less about some sort of external crisis which means that they spend almost no time together, yet again.

in this book, moon is settling in to the indigo cloud court when word comes from another court that moon's mother has learned where he is and wants to claim him. meanwhile, the fell (a predator species that has been attacking raksuran courts, but also trying to crossbreed with them) are back in the picture, seemingly planning an attack on a settlement near moon's mother's court.

please don't mistake me--i did like this book. but i think in the end, i felt like it was a little thin; a little rushed. i love these characters and i wanted to spend more time with them. i think that i expected more revelations about why the fell were trying to crossbreed with the raksuran--i wanted more of a payoff. maybe i want the fell to be more than they can be.

that said, i did love the depiction of the other court--the ways it was similar and different. i loved the new characters--moon's mother, the consort and the mentor (i'm trying for few spoilers but by the end you'll know which consort and mentor i mean), moon's other relatives. i'd love to spend more time with them, too. maybe that's some of the dissatisfaction, too--this feels more like a middle book to me than the end of a trilogy, so i need more books. anyway, a book that makes you want more books is hardly a bad book!
