this is a sequel to "old man's war." i think the first question you ask when you read a sequel is, "can the author do it again?" yes, he can.
there's one carryover character, same universe, maybe five years into the future? scalzi messes with your perceptions from the get-go. as with the first book, there's more here than meets the eye, including the question of what are the components of intelligence and what is needed beyond that. space opera on the surface but with depth. and i like the characters. and moral ambiguity, galore.
again, possibly a hard read if you have recently lost someone you love.
