I actually had the same problem with water, and I have acid reflux anyway, so the extra irritation was no fun (plus it's fucking water, and nobody on earth believes a person who says they can't handle water [sometimes these cretins even say, "That idea don't hold water," and then you get in trouble for assaulting them, which is of course wildly unfair]).

It may be that you just have elevated acid levels naturally if you drink a lot of soda. I used to drink 4-6 Mountain Dews a day, for like....too many years. I quit Dew cold turkey 2 1/2 years ago and since then I've had exponentially less soda of all types, but it was a progressive drop, and I had correspondingly less acid problems as time went on. I sort of "got used" to water and other beverages. I wish I had a solution for killing the acid while the body adjusts. Today I drink mostly water with 2-4 sodas a week and acid is very rare.

As for that annoying adjustment period, here are some general heartburn tricks I've tried which seemed to work--elevate your bed approx six inches at the head. If this would result in Nadia killing you, try sleeping on some thin pillows under your upper back so she could still sleep flat; I'm pretty sure they also make gently sloping single-person sleeping pads for this purpose, though I never bought one. Don't eat or drink anything 2-3 hours before going to bed. Also, I used to be able to smother acid attacks with milk (I think milk is heavier than acid, so a swig or two helped to settle things down, though more than a glass sometimes added to the problem).

Oh--this might seem totally counterintuitive but I drank a lot of Gatorade while transitioning away from soda to water (needed some taste). Too much of that, especially before bed, will get burny, but it was surprisingly tame for me most of the time. It's not super healthy but still better than pop.

All bodies are of course frustratingly different so this all may be totally useless to you. As a ray of hope, if you can pull off less soda, you'll probably see some inspiring results rather quickly. Not only will you feel physically better only having a few cans a week (I started out by trying to limit myself to 1 coke a day, then went down from there) but knocking out sodas plus even a modicum--and I mean even just a MODICUM--of exercise will have a noticeable impact on your weight. If you're looking for a relatively simple battle plan for an early, visible victory to get you going, you're on the right track

(Coffee? Tea? Juice? Literally -anything- but soda...I didn't like those, but people did recommend them to me. If I think of anything else I'll share it just in case.)

Thanks for the advice! Glad to know there is someone out there who can help, as my doctor seemed baffled by it. I'll try to give this stuff a shot.
