First off...I wanted to say that I honestly did not have high expectations going into this movie...at all. My dad offered to take my brother and I to a movie and I gladly accepted. Dinner and a movie? Why the hell not. But, in all honesty, I was more than pleasantly surprised at just how much I enjoyed this movie. I can't stop thinking about it and I'm dying to see it again.
My Review:
Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Natalie Portman as Jane Foster
Tom Hiddleston as Loki
Stellan Skarsgard as Dr. Erik Selvig
Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis
Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson
and
Anthony Hopkins as Odin
As far as acting goes, I think everyone performed admirably. But...there was some questionable choices now and then. I'm mostly talking about like every single one of Sif's one liners. There's one in particular (which just so happens to be her first line in the movie) where Jaimie Alexander goes "Oh, please" and kind of like rolls her eyes. It wasn't good...but she did get better as teh film went on. I also thought Natalie Portman did well with what she was given. She seems to be getting a lot of flak, but I honestly found nothing wrong with her performance. I think people just want to hate it because of who she is. Chris Hemsworth did great too. For his first lead role in a major Hollywood film, he handled himself very well. I wasn't exactly doubtful that he could act though since he was pretty good in Star Trek for the ten minutes he was in the movie, I had faith in him. The standout to me however would have to be Tom Hiddleston (who I am totally stanning for as of last Friday). I personally thought he was incredible, I loved watching him. To hold his own in a scene where his only companion is SIR ANTHONY HOPKINS speaks wonders to me about his ability. He played a very good, complicated Loki and I love me some complex characters. You could tell that he was sad about his father falling into the Odinsleep and that he feels second best, but you could also tell that he was a sneaky little bastard. Oh ho ho ~
I thought the plot was good. It wasn't the best, but it was still pretty good. I thought everything worked out well and there didn't seem to be any glaring plot holes...not that I catch them anyway, but still.
Obviously it's based off of the Marvel comic and not actual Norse mythology, so not everything is going to be completely accurate in regards to the myth - Like Laufey actually being Loki's mother and things like that. However, I did like that Odin was riding Sleipnir and that Thor mentioned Yggdrasil :3
The CGI was well done :) which is always a plus in movies where CGI is a bit of a necessity.
One thing I absolutely hated though was the fucking 3D. This didn't affect how good the movie was to me, but for fuck's sake. I do not recommend seeing movies in 3D, ever. The picture was blurry as fuck and the glasses strained my eyes...probably cause I had to watch the movie in shitty ass 3D. Never. Again. To be fair, I was already a hater and this was my first 3D movie, but I wasn't expecting it to be this bad. I at least thought the picture quality would be...like a regular 2D movie, just with shit popping out at you. It wasn't even worth it either. NOT EVERY MOVIE HAS TO BE 3D. I personally think it's a cheap way to make money on a potentially bad movie and I really don't agree with that.
My Rating: Aside from some iffy dialogue, some sub par acting, and the romance aspect, I give the movie an 4/5. I really honestly loved it. I cannot stress this enough.
Oh also, Chris, Tom, and Stellan will be returning for The Avengers which is being directed by Joss Whedon and is slated for a summer 2012 release!!!
