Expanded version of a drabble done for laurus_nobilis.
Dumbledore was introduced to sherbert lemons by a friend of his; a man who had managed to look about thirty years old for the twenty-five years Dumbledore had known him. Read had said he'd been at Hogwarts, not with your class, dear Dumbledore! and Dumbledore, curious, had gone through the records of the past hundred years and found nothing, and then in exasperation gave the records Read's description and name and the pages had fluttered importantly and lighted on 'Clow Read, Slytherin, Class of 1359'.
Reading through it, Dumbledore saw that if Read had lived a few centuries later he would have been voted 'most likely to be dragged to the stake by a screaming mob' and 'most likely to marry a Muggle and have ten children'. He was brilliant, according to his school records, but the sort of person who did what he pleased when it pleased him to do it. His Charms professor noted that he was very interested in fusion magic, possibly because of his Chinese mother. His House head noted that he kept to himself and didn't cause trouble until trouble came to him. Which it did; Read was as pureblooded as they came but nobody trusted Eastern wizards or their children.
Dumbledore thought about asking him, but Read was a kind man, who allowed Dumbledore the run of his library (and if there were exceptions he was very tactful about enforcing them) and made wonderful scones and taught him a charm to make little glowing lights dance in the air.
