I don't know how to begin talking about how frustrated I am about work. My old co-worker Steve came to visit Korea, and we went out for dinner and drinks, and all we could manage to talk about was work, and how frustrated we all are. We tried to come up with other topics, but it just wasn't happening.

Imagine you work for an organization, a small school, and suddenly all the management (headmaster, principal, vice-principal, and 30% of the office staff) is fired. Just the superintendent, who has basically no idea how to run the day-to-day operations, and the actual teachers, are left.

Then imagine the superintendent comes up with a new, impossible idea or theory every day, and demands that the teachers (whom he also insults daily and insists are instantly replaceable) come up with ways to implement. And then when we DO come up with a way to implement the ideas, he says it isn't at all what he wanted, OR he comes up with a totally different idea and tosses everything we've worked on in the garbage.

Also, when he promises compensation for extra work, or any other benefit, he goes back on his word at the last minute, and LITERALLY puts his hands over his ears when people complain about it.

He also hacks away at benefits, such as vacation time (decreased for native English teachers and eliminated for Korean teachers) and increases workload (making many workbooks, quizzes, tests, and vocabulary lists, as well as working every single Saturday).

Sooner or later, this stops being a brain exercise and starts being the living hell that is my academy. I know I should get some perspective, read the Grapes of Wrath again or something. But right now, all I can think about is how frustrated I am.

Also, North Korea is scaring me and I cried the last time I watched the news. Korean people are not that concerned. And I know most of my stress is coming from my anger about my job, but I think the whole Yeonpyeong attack issue pushed me over the edge.

In happier news, David's parents approved our wedding for spring of 2012! Yay! Of course we have to work out details, but anyway, yay!
