Discuss an uncomfortable situation you were put in by your partner.
He knew he'd upset her. That much was something even the most idiotic man could figure out. But how did she really expect him to take it?
Mutants? Superheroes?
Of course he thought it was a joke. He hadn't been making fun, he hadn't been trying to sound like an ass; he really thought it was a joke. Because that shit didn't exist. Those were things he watched on TV and big screens with his son. Things they read about. They were beings he searched Sam's room for when Sam was a small child, to prove he was safe before he fell asleep.
And he was supposed to take it well? Say what? "Is that so? How wonderful! Would you like to get together soon for a roll in the sheets?" Had that been what she expected? He got that maybe it was hard for her to tell him something like that, but what about him? Why should he get her anger and her tears for not getting it?
Those things...they don't exist to him. He's a lawyer. He takes the facts, the truth as his party sees it, and argues it. This...this was way beyond his truth.
So he didn't handle it well. Fine. Then maybe he was just the jackass all her friends took him for. The drunken idiot she'd accidentally married in Vegas for no real reason. Maybe she'd finally listen to their probable claims that he wasn't good enough. One more thing for them to look down their noses at him over.
So he wasn't some perfect, world-saving superhero. What the fuck did he care? He'd never tried for anything more. Anyone that knew him knew that.
