**DOINK-DOINK** Friday, September 8, 2006. 10:57pm. The Avery Riverside Apartments, a fashionable
building on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
The tall blond woman knocked on the door of the penthouse apartment suite. She checked her watch. Still no answer. That was…odd. She wriggled the doorknob, and was surprised to find it open. Granted, this was one of the best neighborhoods in the city but it was still New York. The first thing that she noticed was the Rembrandt on the floor, in the entryway, the frame broken… She stepped a little further, wondering if they were even home, wondering if maybe they’d been burglarized while they were out, wondering if she should even be there…Her eyes widened as she looked ahead, past the Rembrandt and she let out a scream, stumbling backward, tripping over a piece of the frame as she ran out the door, still screaming. When she’d made it into the elevator, she frantically punched numbers into her cell phone.
“9-1-1, what’s your emergency….”
The operator listened for a moment. “Yes, yes, we’ll send someone out right away, ma’am…”
The dispatcher put a call out and a couple of uniforms took to the scene. When they got there, and realized what was going on, one of them glanced at the other.
“…I don’t like this…I don’t like this at all…Someone better put in a call to Major Case…”
