Limousine liberal. That’s what Arthur had called her, that self-righteous sneer firmly in place.

And maybe he was right. After all, did doling out pseudo-turkey and dressing once a year make a difference in anyone’s life but her own? She sent checks to all the right causes, put in an occasional afternoon at the women’s shelter.

Mother Teresa she wasn’t. She knew that.

Still, were any of those things really acts of love for other human beings or merely an assuaging of her guilt?

And did it really matter either way?

Serena wondered if any of the homeless sleeping outside tonight knew the answer. She had a feeling they just might.
