A/N: It occurred to me that sometimes handling things means not handling them at all.



Tracey Kibre always wrote out her closing argument in long hand. The scratch of the fountain pen against the lined paper matched the rhythm of her thoughts. In each curled stroke, the pen and paper spoke a secretive language only she shared, its cadences passionate and evocative.

The words coming to life on the page before her were intended to sway, to move a jury. She needed to see them emerge, like new-born progeny from her hand, Athena, fully grown and armed for battle. Not empty, voiceless, frozen black letters on a screen. She needed to hear the words speak to her, in their secret, collective tongue. Only then could she, standing before the jury, translate.
