“Let me discuss it with my detectives.”
There it is. I was waiting for that. Jesus, these people are unbelievable.
‘Discuss it’ my ass. At least they didn’t have me escorted from the building. One mistake - just one fucking mistake. How long am I supposed to pay for it?
And who does that bastard think he is anyway, telling me about my girlfriend?
Well, if they think they’re gonna push my buttons, they are sadly mistaken. I’ll just play it cool like I always do. They won’t get to me.
“No problem. Maybe I’ll have some of your major coffee.”

It had been a brutal week. The only bodies gracing her table were young - lives stolen by drugs, or someone they’d trusted.
She did what she could to provide answers, but it had taken its toll.
The chill of the autumn day felt warmer than the morgue. She closed her eyes and lifted her face to the sun, feeling the faint heat caress her cheeks, drying the tears she hid from others.
She smiled at the sound of children laughing nearby and prayed to whoever was listening that they be kept safe. Rising from the bench, she walked back inside.
