Sanctuary - 311 - Pax Romana*

Apr 16, 2011 08:33

*The internet has broken me and made me not love Sanctuary as much anymore, but I am trying to do this as a way to recapture those positive feelings.

I'm just saying the words that Amanda has already spoken. Nbd.

"Don't stare me down, old boy. I've grown accustomed to your face."
Look, I still pretty much think Adam Worth is one of the most hilarious things to happen to this show. Imagine Adam and Nikola just snarking at each other for all time. Like, I understand the plot and blah blah blah, but I just think Adam and Nikola could have been a brotp.

"I'm going to use you to redefine suffering." - Terrifying. If Jack the Ripper ever said that to me, I would probably just freak out for eight million years and I don't even care if I'd become accustomed to his face. Jack the Ripper knows from suffering.

"It's about your girlfriend, the one who likes to kill you every so often." - Adam stop saying such great things, and summing up the angst of the OTP in such a snarky way.

Glad Sanctuary is still committed to their goal of FREAKING ME OUT. I just don't approve.

Did the iTunes copy have full credits? I feel like it might have, but I think I deleted it because it was a HUGE file for my little computer to deal with (which was another part of my annoyance at watching this the first time on April Fool's because my computer HATES big files. And so it was a jerky playback and it made me irritated.)

Ugh. Okay, here's problem one I have with this episode. To kill the characters at the end of the previous episode, have a four month hiatus, and the pay-off is just that she got woken up by a staff member of Praxis? Ugh, I don't know, it seemed to easy. Too, "We kind of wrote ourself into a corner with them dying okay here we go have some stasis sickness juice and one of Ranna's minions." Anyway, I'm still reminded of The Incredibles because I'm pretty sure Amanda probably watched that with Olivia and that is why these various Incredible-like things appear in these episodes.

Okay, really? Did Syndrome just build this whole city? That would be a storyline I would have interest in. Syndrome could hang out with the Hero/Hero II guy and show him what it's really like to be a fake superhero. THAT IS SOMETHING I COULD GET ON BOARD WITH.

I am just going to say this now, while my level of irritation at the internet is high. I do not feel lesbian subtext or sexual tension between Helen Magnus and Ranna TooLazyToSeeIfSheHasaLastName. Spoiler alert for later in the episode: I'm pretty sure she's banging Gregory Magnus, and I have been thinking that since the first half of this season, and so shipping Helen and Ranna is weird to me on a variety of levels, but it's also weird to me because I hate the posts people are making about it and they make my rage build to high levels. Anyway. I ship Ranna/Gregory and that's what I have to say about that. (Except I don't really ship it, it's just as a counter to all the annoying things I see elsewhere. kanyeshrug.gif)

I do always enjoy Helen being a big old bad ass. It is relevant to my interests and it reminds me why I like the character. I wish they would get back to Earth, though. I am ready to see the sky, and to see Helen in different clothes and for a different storyline. I liked the Hollow Earth plot basically until they got to Hollow Earth.

I don't know how he did it. And really, at this point, I am 100% more invested in what Adam Worth is up to than in anything else. He is just so interesting to me!

Other things I like a lot: The special effects. And the bitchy Juno Tollen or whatever his name is. And here's a fact: He is in love with Ranna and jealous of Gregory so hates Helen by proxy. THERE I HAVE JUST MADE UP SOME CANON FOR MY FAKE!SHIP.

Fun fact: Whenever Ranna says Kanaan, I think "KaNAAN" from SGA and just want to know where Teyla is and his avatar probably doesn't appear in the chamber because he is making Teyla pregnant off-screen, just like he did in SGA.

Hyperspecies. I don't know why, but I don't like this new term that they've just made up. Like, sometimes this show doesn't do the casual introduction of terms, it's just whenever they want to use a word, the character uses it for the first time and it's supposedly like they've known it forever. Also Kananan reminds me of a Pokemon. I don't know which one.

"Well it's hard to diagnose especially if you're not quite as badass as I am And has Helen seen a Tunisian Serapod before? I...I just don't know.

"I'm not one to hold a grudge or anything but they killed us."
"Yeah, and they won't cure you."
"Yeah, grudge"

Aw, look at the Sanctuary family being a great little family.

I do like these moments of Team Awesome. Unless Helen is hanging out with John and Nikola, I like it best when she is hanging out with her team.

Look at Henry's little excited face. He and Kate were far and away the best parts of the episode for me. LOOK HOW FAR KATE AND I HAVE COME! I AM SAYING SHE IS THE BEST PART OF AN EPISODE. We have come very far. Well done, Agam Darsi.

Can you imagine if Daniel Jackson and Will Zimmerman hung out? It would be the ultimate derp parade, I'm pretty sure.

Also, okay, my computer is being the actual worst right now, so no more pictures, just words, unless something out of this world fantastic happens. And right now I can only think of one scene that would prompt me to screencap. So. (Ugh, I just want to be excited about this show again. I JUST WANT THE FEELINGS BACK)

Henry is like a kid in a candy store and RyRo is pretty great at it. Seriously. It's all about the Kate/Henry brotp happening in this episode. (Somewhere in the middle of this hiatus, I became way more about brotps and a lot less about otps)

"Keep a lid on him."
"I'll do my best."

Um, also, I have questions. These people in Praxis do not encounter the surface world that often, except for anomalies like Gregory and Adam? HOW DO THEY HAVE THE SAME LANGUAGE AND THE SAME WORDS FOR THINGS. I mean, she doesn't know what an iPod is, and I appreciate that, but how did both surface people and Praxis people come up with insulin and striations and all the same medical worlds. I just. I guess it's like Stargates, where everyone speaks the same language.

"He was...a friend." A naked friend. Ranna/Gregory 4lyf

Adam is like Houdini. Or the guy from Alcatraz. AKA more interesting than just about everyone else.

"No one is going anywhere until you treat her condition first." Family just takin' care of each other. Also I like that Helen is badass enough to inject her own serum. Like. That's BAMF. And something I could never do. (But then, everything on this show is something I could never do, so.)

Also unbelievable: That Kate hates rides. I pretty much doubt that strongly from everything else we know about Kate. She is a roller coaster girl and no one can convince me otherwise. (I'm really trying to be positive about this episode, and I promise I am being more positive than I was the first time I watched this, but I found many things problematic)

Maybe Sanctuary's strategy is that they like to occasionally disappoint with episodes so that the really good episodes are that much better in comparison. Maybe I wouldn't have enjoyed "Bank Job" as much if I had really been blown away bu "Kali 3"

Oh, hey Gregory. He's here for two reasons: His daughter and his lover. (Ugh, okay, I need to let this go because it is not conducive and it's really just me being a douche about internet crap that irritates me)

I do really love the special effects. I just like them a lot.

Also, I tried to diagnose this Tunisian Serapod from, um, when my fish was pregnant, so I really thought that the serapod was going to be pregnant. Because betta fish get striations, I think, when they are pregnant. So yeah. I pretty much was wrong about that. And I was all uppity about it until the parasite storyline came out (but in my defense: pregnancy = parasite, BASICALLY, so I was actually right and am a genius. Never mind, the world makes sense again.)

CONCUBINE. NEVER FORGET.

This seems like such a long episode to me, or slow moving, or something. Either way I am not engaged and there are sixteen minutes left and I really just can't believe there's still that much time left because I want to watch the Catherine Tate Show but I felt obligated to do this post, and I just want this episode to be over so I can start trying to get excited about next week's episode.

Also Helen just implied that she'd never seen a Tunisian serapod or the parasite breed before, which is FINE she doesn't have to have encyclopedic knowledge, but it just seemed like she was familiar with them earlier in this episode, and the way she and her dad just talked about them. Idk idk, did two different writers work on this script without talking to each other? Maybe that would explain it. Better episode next week. Fingers crossed.

I think my computer just hates this episode. I have never had this much trouble playing an episode back before. I just don't know.

Ugh, please stop talking about reaching into this hyperspecies Pokemon, it grosses me out. Another thing Sanctuary is all about.

Henry is pretty much the most badass hacker of all time. And he is so upset that Will can't understand his technobabble. Ugh, Sanctuary family, you are always excellent and that is the truth.

It's a good thing that Helen got here at the same time everything almost exploded. How fortuitous and coincidental. (Ugh, I shouldn't be hard on the show, that is just a general TV trope and I should just let it go. But overused plot devices are just. They are not my favorite, especially when I already feel irritation.)

"You've been hacked, dude." Never change, Henry. Never change.

Also this show teaches: Don't trust pretty girls, unless they are named Helen or Kate.

Okay, sometimes this show overuses lines because I think they know fans like them. So Helen saying, "Bloody hell" is not longer great for me, it is overused. And that is what I feel about it no matter if I enjoyed the episode or not.

"There's a new species of sheriff in town." NEVER CHANGE ADAM AND I WILL MISS YOU! (True typo I keep making: Adam as Adama. I blame "Battlestar Galactica" for this. It was problematic when I was writing a religious studies essay on theodicy and the origins of it in the Garden of Eden or whatever the hell that paper was about)

These special effects are like Star Wars. I just want Henry to say, "Help me, Helen Magnus. You're my only hope" BECAUSE YOU KNOW HE WANTS TO. YOU KNOW HE LOVES STAR WARS AND HE WOULD WANT TO RECREATE THAT MOMENT.

Will with a gun is the derpiest thing ever. Helen with a gun is pretty bamf though, so let's focus on that.

The suits Helen and Ranna wore down to the magma place are weird. /this is not a fashion blog

This is the single most terrifying thing the show has ever done. I am not even screencapping the close up of his face because I can't deal with that. But well played, Jack the Ripper, I am sufficiently terrified of you forever. And I think that moment accomplished far more to making a case for John's insanity and killing tendencies than any of the flashbacks to the past. I find him much more terrifying when he is bald than when he has his unfortunate Victorian Age hair.

ALL DEBTS PAID IN FULL. "It's not like John to take his victims with him, is it?" She says that so casually. Just so casually. That means something, but I don't know what it means because I can't think anymore. And it's only 8:15.

[insert Ranna/Gregory comment that I am too lazy to think of or snark about]

Family feelings. Helen and her dad. She just loves him. He just loves her. But he also just loves Ranna and the feelings she gives him. There we go. Got it.

OKAY EPISODE IS OVER. YOUR MISSION IS TO MAKE ME EXCITED ABOUT THIS SHOW AGAIN.
