So I got back from Orientation today! It was a good time despite the lousy weather and boring presentations. But I learned a lot about on campus jobs and study abroad options and things like that and I had a good time with my Jen.
But it was not all great. I learned during the group advising session that in order to be a mass communications major, which my PR degree would be, you need to pass a test called the English Diagnostic Test. It's basically like a thousand questions about grammar and what a gerund or participle is. The test costs $50 each time you take it and the average amount of time a person has to take it is 4-5 times, as it only has a 50% passing rate. There is one class that is a prerequisite for all other classes in the major, Writing for Mass Communications, and you cannot even register for that class until you pass the English Diagnostic Test and meet with your advisor. Because of this requirement, the majority of students in the mass comm track tend to be delayed a semester and don't graduate until December. At this point, I have no idea if I'll be able to make it up to Tampa again to take the test or if I'll pass it if I do. Studying is of course encouraged, but I have never been great at grammar rules and stuff which is why Heather reads every single thing I write and fixes me.
Mostly, I'm just...disappointed and deflated. It took me so long to figure out what I wanted to major in and where I wanted to go to school and now it seems like those two choices aren't compatible. I don't know if I should just deal with the extra semester and take out more loans or try to find a new major or...I don't know. I'm not sure what my other options are at this point. :\ Maybe I can keep playing with the "What If?" major chooser on USF's website until something clicks.
After this, I tried to get drunk. I don't think it worked. I am an awful 22-year-old.
