So the first day of class yielded two cancelled classes (which is what happens when all the classics profs go to the same conference), 150 pages of reading (roughly) and 30 more lines of Ovid for Monday. Awk.

Then I went downtown to see Pride and Prejudice with moosefluff and fuzzycoatimundi. I should add that they're both total sweethearts and FAR TOO NICE. Anyhow, the movie was good, although I maintain that Darcy was grossly miscast - but I'm not allowed to say that when 'Fluff is around - and, yeah. Geese! And total goofiness from Bingley and Darcy! And, and, and! It has a very romantic sensibility to it. I think Austen is probably spinning in her grave, but I enjoyed it too much to care.

Speaking of Pride and Prejudice, the other day I stayed up until one watching the 1940 Olivier version with my mum.

What. The. Faulkner.

I think Mum got almost as much entertainment from watching me as from watching the movie. I spent most of the movie making little squeaky noises like "What?!" and "No!", shouting things like "THE DIALOGUE. IT BURNS AND STINGS", and on one memorable occasion letting out a horrible gurgling scream and then trying to eat my hand. Holy shit. I would describe it, but I think it has to be seen to be believed. Besides, I wouldn't want to spoil the surprise for anyone. :P

For all that, though, there were a lot of things I liked about it at the time. I'm not sure what they are now, :D, but they were there. I liked Elizabeth, despite the fact that she seemed rather circumscribed by the conventions of the time. I liked Olivier as Darcy too, except he did such distressing things with his hands.

Anyhow! Best Hamlet link ever! Seriously! Make sure you read all the ads and click the links. :D
