gird up thy loins

1. Headache + stiff neck + sore throat + chills + dizziness = fever? Possibly? At least now I know what I've been fighting off for the last week.

2. Not coincidentally, this essay came very close to kicking my ass. Fortunately it is now done.

3. Best sentence: "Unfortunately for Florinda, when male sexuality in the form of Willmore arrives on the scene, her quest for self-determination turns darker and potentially violent."

4. Of the many non-productively productive things I've done this week when I haven't been either getting sick or writing this paper, getting myself back into taking lessons has been one of the best. Admittedly I haven't actually had one yet, but I am hopeful.

Basic recap: I stopped taking private music lessons essentially at the end of high school, because I moved out. Cue much angst, occasional failures and a lot of waiting to get myself back into it. I have huge issues surrounding private lessons, but more than a year since I became determined to start taking them again, I'm finally doing it.

On Sunday after the Baranduin rehearsal, I dragged Paul - who is the violin coach for the early music ensemble at UBC and has worked with me for a year now - out and bought him coffee in return for being allowed to bitch at him about my musical life. He was really supportive (because he is awesome, which is why I'm allowing him to teach me) and said basically that the attitudes I've been struggling for years to develop make sense. I have my first lesson on Saturday; I'm nervous but enthusiastic, and I think this is something I'm ready to do. Wish me luck.
