a whole new can of worms

I was thinking the other day that facebook needed an "acquaintance" action for when someone friends you and you want to acknowledge the fact that you know them and they are technically part of your social network, but without having their news posted all over your wall, or whatever the proper jargon is. Then I thought that they would also need a "relatives" action for those aunts who are really too old for facebook in the first place. Then I started thinking about the social/emotional ramifications of non-reciprocal facebook connections, and decided that maybe that particular problem doesn't need to be raised quite yet.

When I got home tonight, there was a police car, lights flashing softly, double-parked right outside my building. Two cops were standing on the steps questioning a resident. I had to go up the stairs to get to my apartment. I was kind of hesitant; what had happened? When I lingered too long peering at them, one of the policemen asked me if everything was OK. I responded, "That's what I was wondering." Turns out they were just standing there gossiping. yeesh.
