Thesis submitted.

So, I submitted my thesis to my committee last night. And let me first say: WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! :D

I can't really believe it. It doesn't feel real at all. Plus it's hard to shake the fact that my thesis was far, far from perfect... I'm still kind of worried that they'll tell me it's unacceptable and unworthy of defense. I don't think that's actually likely, but it's hard to move on from the endless lists in my head of things that I should have improved but didn't have time for. Anyway, on Monday my committee will tell the department whether or not my thesis is okay, and presumably I will then defend it a week later, as planned. (And if for some reason it isn't acceptable -- well, at least I wrote 200 pages that I'm sure will come in very handy in the final draft. So really, Self, you should go ahead and relax a bit. It'll all be fine, whatever happens.)

I'm not done at this point -- not even really with the thesis. There's a bunch of figures and things that need fixing; they're good enough for my committee to tell what's going on, but they're ugly or colored wrongly or sized wrong or pixelated or... yeah, I have a lot of fixing of figures and tables to do. But that's mostly mindless stuff. And I need to write the abstract and acknowledgments by Monday, too, but that's easy enough. The 5 chapters of experiments and analyses and discussion -- that's all taken care of, and that was the hard part.

I also need to write my practice talk, give my practice talk, and then turn it into an actual defense talk based on the feedback I get. I like giving talks (though I hate answering questions after a talk, unfortunately). So I'm a lot less stressed about the rest of the process than about writing the thesis.

After the talk, I'll make any revisions that my committee requests and turn in my final draft. And then I will keep being paid by my advisor for the rest of the summer, because I'm wrapping up a few projects and turning my thesis chapters into journal articles. But I'll be doing some of that work from California, because I'm moving in August. Oh, and in July I probably should start looking for jobs more seriously, too. :)

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, thesis done! Despite everything that's left, it all seems pretty simple from here on out.

I'm hoping to start reading LJ and the rest of the internet more soon. But if you want me to know anything that's been up with you while I've been buried in my dissertation, or if anything big happens before then end of June, links or emails would be appreciated, because I've really been out of it (and might still be till I've defended).
