It's cool girl, everything's PBJ...drgabboFebruary 5 2006, 14:29:53 UTC
Another way of looking at relationships (and in particular, conflicts within them) is to think of two streams combining into a river. Two independent, peaceful streams at some point will converge with one another and the immediate result is always chaotic. Water sprays everywhere, currents work against each other and rocks are caught in the middle causing strong rapids. However, if you look about a mile down the river, everything is once again calm and organized as the current has become unified and works together. Now the that two have combined the result is a mighty river, something that neither small stream could have accomplished on its own. Is it always enough for anyone to be content in their self-independence without risking the possibility of achieving something greater? Obviously not, you're never enough by yourself. Conflict is normal, it's healthy and when dealt with properly it is actually VERY helpful. The key is to figure out HOW to deal with these difficult situations in the right way. It takes a lot of real listening, unselfishness and a helluva lot of willingness to compromise! Your PBJ analogy works great, too. It shows that people who are unbalanced with their own lives are incapable of opening up and accommodating others.
(I swear I didn't steal this from Dr. Phil or even Jack Handy)
