science in the media

I can't remember who I was telling about this, but here is that hilarious excerpt from our favorite magazine:

CAN'T-HELP-IT HABIT #4
He really can't see a mess.
No matter how hard guys try to pick up after themselves, they always leave some kind of slop behind. Apparently, it's not designed to drive us insane. "Men just naturally don't notice detail as much as women do," says Jay Carter, PsyD, author of Nasty Men. "They're totally oblivious when it comes to the itty-bitty stuff, so they're truly convinced that things are completely clean even when there's food stuck to the counter." Plus, women have more rods in their eyes, which allows them to spot particles like dust and crumbs more easily. If you want a guy to get down to the nitty-gritty, "appeal to his goal-oriented nature and give him specific tasks," suggests Carter. . . .

Seriously, HOW do they come up with this stuff!?

Also, I really just do not understand why everyone is making such a huge fuss over this birth-order effect on IQ in Norwegian pairs of brothers. But I was particularly infuriated by this little side-note in the blog section of the NYTimes (which I'm sure a lot of people don't realize is not actually news)

public, science, female, cones, detail, male, media, iq, rods, gender differences, cosmo, birth order
