I've had the discussion many-a-time: Which is better, the book or the movie? Most of the time, I hands down believe the book is better than the movie. Books open our imagination in a way that movies cannot. Reading makes us smarter as we're forced to process words and create our own interpretations. So why is it that I keep asking: Which is better, the book or the movie?
Movies bring to life things we've imagined, and sometimes even things we haven't ever imagined. Most recently, I saw "The Great and Powerful Oz" in the theater. The colors and special effects alone are something that I could never in my wildest dreams imagine. Movies take away all the "work" in novels; showing us intricate character features, creating settings without have to explain the physical settings, and portraying profound feelings with ease...But there's something about discovering all of those things in your mind that make it that much more meaningful.
Recently, the movie "Silver Linings Playbook" came out which is a perfect example of a movie that's even better than the book. After I saw that movie, I felt a change. A real change in me. This is a very rare thing for me, as usually movies affect me at the time of viewing but distinguish shortly after. Books, however create this feeling for me all the time. After I finish reading a good book, the story becomes a part of me. More than likely, this is why I can never physically give up my copy of a book I love, and why my collection borders on ridiculous.
Ever since I read The Alchemist for the first time, I've forever had a better understanding of the control I have of my own fate. After reading Ishmael I've had a better grasp of the world around me. The reason I'm always asking, "Which is better, the book or the movie?" is because for me, it's a battle for my heart. Which do I love more, books or movies?
