TweetToday at Allison’s day camp, they had an synthetic ice rink set-up for the kids to ice skate. It was 92 degrees at 4:00 p.m. today when I arrived at the “ice rink.” The kids were skating around and having a great time. There was real ice skates and the rink was composed of a plastic material that mimicked ice.
Allison LOVED ice skating. I came by right after I was done with work today. Usually, she is upset when she sees me. She wants to stay all day and into the late afternoon. I come by to pick her up around the same time I would pick her up if she were in school. When she saw me this afternoon, she waved her spaghetti arms wildly in my direction.
“MOMMY!” she shouted across the park. “Come skate with me!”
I decided to take the plunge and put on a pair of skates. I was sweating like crazy and I have to argue that the “ice” was synthetic, yet not quite authentic. I was very good at ice skating when I was a kid. We used to go fairly frequently. This rink needed a Zamboni to smooth the surface. I would skate a few feet and my skate would get caught in a groove. It was a sufficient calf workout for sure. Eventually, I got the hang of it. I am not ten years old anymore and it was a challenge. I had a great time and it made the little girl very happy.
The rink operators were spraying the kids with the hose, out in the sweltering sun. It was a beautiful day, albeit, quite warm.
We spent another 30 minutes or so swinging on the swings, under the shaded canopy of trees a short distance away. I watched her run across the playground and was reminded that my baby is growing up into a young lady. I cannot believe nearly six years ago she was a mere 7 pounds.
