Summary: John had never meant to stay. Companion piece to Envy.
A/N: starpixie16 made some great comments about “Jump The Shark,” on her LJ. She said that she thought John’s decision to play such a large part in Adam’s life felt out of character, because that was the reason he stayed away from Sam and Dean in season 1. That got me wondering: just what was John thinking when he made that choice? Then Nana56 commented on my other “Jump The Shark,” drabble, and turned this bunny into an insistent one. :)

Just Once
John Winchester sat silently in his truck, parked across the street from the house, waiting.
He wasn't planning to stay.
He just wanted to check on the boy and go. Anything else, he knew, would put his son -- the son he'd just learned he had -- in danger. And he couldn't do that, not again.
His gaze fell on the wrinkled photo tacked to his dashboard. With Sam and Dean, he reminded himself, he didn't have a choice. They were already a part of this, and he couldn't change that, no matter how much he wished he could. But this boy -- Adam -- he could have what they couldn't. He could have a normal life. He could live without fear, without constantly having to look over his shoulder.
John could give him that much, at least.
All he needed was one look. One look, and then he was gone.
He didn’t have to wait long.
He watched as the front door of the house opened and a boy ran down the steps, taking them two at a time. A 12-year-old-boy with unruly blond hair, blue eyes, and his chin.
John froze.
That was his son. His son.
A minute passed.
He’d done what he’d come here to do. It was time to leave.
But John didn’t move. He didn’t want to.
What he was thinking was selfish. It was wrong.
He knew that.
But once, just once, he wanted to pretend he'd gotten his happily ever after.
Just once.
Glancing one last time at the photo of his boys, John Winchester got out of his truck and walked across the street.
