A/N: I’ve always loved that line from DT, “Your dad? He’s in here with me. Trapped inside his own meat-suit. He says, ‘hi,’ by the way.” I couldn’t help wondering…Samuel Campbell was in the same position. When he was possessed, what was he thinking?

Legacy
Samuel Campbell is a proud man, but he has reason to be. His father was a hunter, and his grandfather, and his father before him.
It’s the family business. Their legacy.
They’ve lost so much, sacrificed so much, but in the end it’s worth it all, and they’ll keep going until every evil thing out there is dead, or they are.
Tonight...tonight, he knows, his time’s run out. He’s going to die. He can feel it deep in his bones, can almost imagine a reaper nearby, watching...waiting. He’s done his part, and now it’s someone else’s turn to carry on their legacy.
It won’t be Mary.
He knows that just like he knows that death is coming for him.
He loves his daughter and he’s proud of her, proud of her strength, but he can see how she longs for a normal life, for safety, for the peace a hunter can never really find.
She thinks he doesn’t understand, but he does. He wishes things could be different. He wishes that the world wasn’t full of evil, but it is, and wishing won’t change the way things are.
Wishing won’t make the evil go away. Someone has to fight it.
The demon sneers at his thoughts, dismissing them, and walks over to the boy who sits, pinned against the wall, hatred in his gaze.
The boy.
Dean. His grandson.
He wouldn’t have believed it. He would have called the boy crazy and thrown him out of the house, had him taken away by the men in white coats -- except that the demon inside him believes it, can sense it, can feel the subtle wrongness of Dean’s presence here, in the past.
The demon lets him feel it too, because it can, because it wants Samuel to know the part he’ll be forced to play in torturing and killing his grandson before he’s even born.
He hears the mocking in his own voice as the demon speaks, describing what it’s going to do to Dean’s family...to their family. To Mary.
Samuel fights for all he’s worth, lashing out, but the mental chains hold tight. The boy struggles too, twisting in invisible bonds, fury radiating in every line of his body.
The demon watches them both, amused...confident.
When Dean vows that he’ll be the one to kill it, the thing inside him laughs, but Samuel sees the truth written in the boy’s eyes.
Mary’s eyes, Samuel thinks. They’re Mary’s eyes.
The demon pulls the knife from Samuel’s belt, and he can feel the weight of the blade in his hand.
This is it. The end. For him, at least.
But not for their family.
The demon raises the blade, believing it’s won. Samuel looks at the boy in front of him one last time, and knows that Dean will finish it. Dean will finish what they started.
Dean, who’s facing down the demon with his head held high…strong, defiant, unafraid.
Dean. His grandson.
Their future. Their legacy.
And even as the demon sinks the blade into his stomach, Samuel smiles.
