Disclaimer: I own nothing! I am just borrowing them.
Summary: An ongoing story about our favorite couple and a journey with their daughters. Can't share too much or I'll ruin it. ;)
FYI: Sofia is 7 and Becca (my made up daughter) is 5.
A/N: I posted part 1 directly on the
callie_arizona community but I'll be posting the rest of the parts under fake cuts to my journal. It's easier that way. Also,
THIS is what I picture Sofia would look like. And
THIS is what I picture Becca would look like.

(Sorry this is so short.)
Alex Karev woke up to the sound of his phone ringing. He looked at his watch and saw that it was four minutes until his alarm was set to go off. He hit the silent button on his phone and turned back to wrap his arms around Lucy. His phone rang again.
"Get the damn phone Alex," murmured Lucy.
Alex grabbed his phone and saw the familiar number on his caller ID. "It's Robbins."
"Great, just answer it for God's sake," said Lucy as she crawled out of their makeshift bed and out of their tent into the dry African air.
"Karev here," said Alex.
"Oh thank goodness you picked up the phone. I have a case I would like to ask you about," said Arizona, before remembering her manners. "I'm sorry I called you this early. How's Lucy? How's Malawi?"
"Everything's good, now what's up?" asked Alex, wiping his eyes and yawning.
"Well, a seven year old female came into the hospital with a giant bruise on her ribcage. She is complaining of joint pain and exhaustion. Negative for infection. Negative for strep or mono. She has a low-grade fever and loss of appetite. Her CBC showed signs of elevated white blood cells and decreased red blood cells," said Arizona. "What's your diagnosis?"
"Not that I am complaining about you calling Dr. Robbins, but the case is open and shut based on your information. It's clearly acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The joint pain was a dead giveaway," said Alex. "We've seen this tons of times in Seattle. Why did you need to ask me?"
Arizona's side of the phone went silent.
"Wait a minute. Isn't Sofia seven years old?" asked Alex.
Arizona muffled a few sobs. "She is."
"You didn't want to be the one to make the diagnosis..." said Alex, sadness taking over his mood.
"Exactly. And now I have to tell Sofia. Oh God, I have to tell Callie and little Becca," said Arizona, her eyes shimmering with tears of despair.
Lucy sprinted back into the tent, her scrubs bloody. "Alex we need you outside. One of the little boys we were monitoring just started throwing up blood."
"Robbins I have to go, it's an emergency. But I will call you back later. Stay strong," said Alex as he quickly shut his phone and threw it onto their bed. Lucy grabbed his arm and they sprinted out of their tent.
Back in Seattle, Arizona sat beside Sofia, gently stroking her daughter's hand. She needed to go tell Callie. She wiped her tears and stepped out of the room. She asked the nurses to watch over her little girl and proceeded to the OR Callie was in. She scrubbed up and entered the OR.
"Almost finished here," said Callie, digging around inside of some man's leg.
"C-Calliope I got the results," said Arizona, trying desperately to not stutter.
"They were clear right? Probably a cold or something?" said Callie.
"Uhm, no. Based on the results, it's most likely ALL. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia," said Arizona.
Callie's hands froze. "Leukemia? What makes you think that?"
"CBC showed high levels of white blood cells. She's tired, not hungry, and her joints hurt. I called Karev and he thinks so too," said Arizona.
Callie was in disbelief. "You're wrong. Did you do a biopsy to confirm?"
"Well, no. I didn't think about it yet," said Arizona.
"So it might not be leukemia," said Callie, sewing up the man's leg.
"Callie. I've seen ALL before. This is a textbook case. I need to do a lumbar puncture as well to see if it has metastasized," murmured Arizona, afraid of what Callie might say next.
"I'm done here," announced Callie to the surgery techs. She walked out of the OR and into the scrub room to wash up. Arizona followed.
"Callie. Say something," said Arizona, putting her arm on Callie's shoulder.
Callie burst into tears. Arizona wrapped her arms around her wife and cried too.
"The good news is that this type of leukemia has an 80% survival rate and our hospital has all the amenities needed to treat it," murmured Arizona.
Callie stood back and wiped her tears. "I'm still scared. She's our little girl, you know?"
"I know. I always knew her premature birth could cause future issues, but I prayed that it wouldn't happen to her. And we need to tell Mark tonight," said Arizona.
"Oh God. Mark. And Becca," said Callie as she began to cry again. "This could kill him. And Becca won't understand!"
"It will be okay. We'll tell them together. But first, let's go see Sofia, hmm?" said Arizona, lacing her fingers with Callie's.
"Okay," said Callie.
