The last entry in the series on Jareth's costumes in "Labyrinth". These two costumes (Escher Duel and Bruised Owl) are fairly unique outfits without a lot of shared elements from other costumes, except for the Somewhat Shiny Charcoal Pants and His Own Boots/Gloves in the Escher scene ( Read more... )

If you ever see that link again, please send it my way. The only discussions I found when doing costume research were simply mentions that it changes to represent Jareth's power, not exactly how.

At any rate, it was interesting to watch the symbol change for myself, especially in the climactic Escher scene where the symbol becomes inverted (bronze with silver centre, and is turned upside down).

The progression is this:

Silver with bronze/gold centre built into chestpiece (Black Armour) -> Silver with bronze/gold centre pendant on necklace (Magic Dance, Peach, etc) -> missing (Masquerade) -> Silver with bronze/gold centre pendant on necklace again (Battle) -> Bronze/gold with silver centre, upside-down, built into chestpiece (Escher) -> Bronze/gold with silver centre, right-side up again, pendant on necklace (Bruised Owl)

It was also interesting to me that there's a photo of Toby Froud's pendant (he played the baby Toby) that he received from the production. He had it at a convention and showed it to some fans and it's really tarnished grey with a bronze/gold centre.

When I watched the film I expected to find the pendant tarnished and dull at some point, but it never actually is. It's always shiny. So I think Toby's must just have tarnished over time.
