I have been a Harry Potter fan ever since I can remember. I have read the first book a total of 23 times and went to watch the movie seven times while it was on theaters. No, I am not kidding. Naturally, I was almost on tears by the time the final credits rolled, and then i heard the song. That little tune that redefined my childhood, obviously revamped, was the same song in the very first movie. Touched, I reached for the movie collection as soon as I got home and did the whole movie marathon thing. After that, I did the whole reading marathon thing. And it was then that I noticed how the last two movies and the last book were similar, but not quite the same.
So what's the point of this post, you ask? Well, like the title implies, it's a comparison. So, in order to start, I have to add that this is my view of things and that it does not imply I think the book is better than the movies. As a matter of fact, the movies were the reason for the magic to have lasted a decade.
I'll begin with what I didn't like about the movies:
-For starters, I think they were too fast-paced, the tension and speed kept building up until the end was like *poof* where did that all go? And I felt a little bit disappointed.
-Then, there was the confusion about the Elder Wand and who was its owner in the end. Also, I found the part with the Resurrection Stone confusing.
-The lack of Teddy Tonks and the Tonks/Lupin relationship.
-Helena Ravenclaw. I don't know why.
On to what I didn't like about the book:
-I love the fact that the movies give a shape to the imagined world. Obviously, they make characters come alive. So I was wooed by the tale of the three brothers and by Snape's memories because, sadly, my imagination failed. And there's no way the book could have given that accurate an image through description. Other than that, there are no flaws I could find on the book.
What I liked about the movies:
-The special effects. Enough said.
-Snape and his memories. The fact that he went to see whether Lily was alright and crumbled before baby Harry was so touching it redefined my view of the character. Alan Rickman was flawless.
-Minerva McGonnagall and the quote: "I've always wanted to use that spell!" :D
-As I said above, the sequences with the tale of the tree brothers and Snape's memories.
-Another memorable sequence is Luna's dance at the wedding.
-Harry destroys the Elder Wand at the end.
And finally, what I liked about the book:
-McGonnagall helps enter the Ravenclaw common room.
-Harry gets to speak with Dumbledore again, albeit through the portrait in the Headmaster's office.
-The explanation on Ariana's death and Dumbledore's friendship with Grindelwald.
-The fact that Harry used the Elder Wand to repair his. I don't think the relationship he had with his wand (That sentence came out soooooo wrong) transferred to the movie.
So that was it, my thoughts and feelings on the ending to the magic that has lasted a decade. Harry Potter has changed with my generation, I was almost the same age he was through the movies, so I believe I have grown with him. And, before I ramble on forever, I'll stop here. I hope you enjoyed this post and be sure to be on the lookout for more like it.
