Best way to explore a city is indeed to rely on public transportation and to get off at random stops or whenever something looks like it might be interesting.
I've never been to Berlin though, I'd like to one day.
Yup, that's something new I've learned from this trip too - as well as CouchSurfing also being a great way to see what's worth seeing/avoid what's not, as you can get advice from people who actually live there!
Obviously, I'd recommend checking out Berlin when you get the chance. I've just got so many other places I want to see, I've no idea how much more I can love a city - whether I've already found my favourite place or whether there are some truly way more mindblowing places I need to see. Guess there's only one way to find out!
Checkpoint Charlie made me very fucking angry. Considering what it is, the level of tasteless tourism attached to it was ridiculous. Have your photo taken with grinning actors dressed up to be border control! Eat at themed cafe you can see the grave markers from! That kind of shit. Not cool.
Yeah that does sound shitty, though considering it was Friedrichstraße I must have walked past it more than once. It's why I didn't spend so much time in the Stadtmitte, either - just walking through it, staring at the nice buildings and not stopping. Next time I go to a big city I'll definitely repeat the exploring method of choosing public transport stops at random and wandering down different streets, you really do see the most interesting shit.
Seeing as you do a lot of this travelling malarkey, I thought it best to ask you the following: where in Europe can I go, for two or three days, that is both cheap (to get to, as well as when I'm there) and good fun? Me and my girlfriend are looking to escape this crappy country for a couple of days, y'see.
And it seems somebody already beat me to a dodgy comment about these 'new experiences' of yours in Berlin. My day is ruined. :(

Hmmm, well, very close by (and thus cheap to get to) is Amsterdam, which is a crazy city with a good mixture of places for drinking/smoking up and clubs, crazy shops but also plenty of great architecture, awesome gardens/parks and museums. If you go there, make sure book a hostel at the Flying Pig and you won't want to leave. Check out ryanair maybe or KLM for flights
