Hello all! So I have an "Shattered" update to share with you. :D The other day I had decided to see if I could spend the entire day without going online/using my computer. So, I had to write my fic in a notebook and I thought it would be fun to share with you what I wrote using scans of my notebook.
What I wrote should go in about two chapters from what I last wrote, and is a new scene between Luke and Kyle, who is spending Thanksgiving with the Snyders. It's kind of spoilery, but really it's just Kyle talking to Luke about Luke's budding feelings for Dr. Oliver. If you don't want to read it, you don't have to, I just thought it would be something fun to tide you all over until I do an actual update.
I've typed up each page underneath each scan in case you can't read something, and I might have done some editing while typing so it could be slightly different than the handwritten stuff.
The cold air bit at Luke's face as he stood just outside the farmhouse, his hands warmed by the mug of hot cider clutched between them, his melancholy stare raised to the stars twinkling in the clear night sky. He was trying (in vain) to clear his head, filled with jumbling thoughts of Noah. And Reid.
The young man let out a long breath, watching as the white fog hovered above his head. Ever since Halloween (A/N: They have a "moment." That chapter still needs a lot of editing so I'm not sure anymore what the "moment" includes yet.) the doctor had invaded Luke's thoughts more often than he cared toa dmit. And seeing him tonigh, mingling with his family, smiling and laughing...it was too much for Luke to handle.
He thought fondly of last Thanksgiving, the entire evening was full of talk about Noah and Luke's wedding, whenever they actually had it. It had felt like everything in his life had finally fallen into place and now...now he could barely stand on his own two feet.
Warm light from the house spilled onto the yard, throwing Luke's shadow out in front of him and he turned
to see Kyle walking out toward him.
"Sorry for leaving you by yourself,' Luke apologized as the older man stood beside him. "I just needed a moment." (A/N #2: That's not some government blackout, that was me editing the story as I was editing the picture file.)
"No problem. Dr. Oliver kept me occupied with discussing his case." He chuckled, his throaty voice even raspier from the cold.
"Ah yes, Dr. Oliver," Luke murmured as he took a sip of his cooling drink.
Kyle gave him a knowing glance. "He's not what I expected," the dark-haired man admitted.
"I'm pretty sure that's everyone's reaction to him."
"Even you?"
"I still think he's a pompous ass," Luke said sharply as he stared up at the sky again.
"Come on Luke. I've seen the way you look at him, it's not hate. So how do you feel about the guy?"
Luke looked at Kyle, who had turned to face the blonde head on, his arms crossed against his chest.
"I don't know," he answered into his mug. Kyle scoffed. "Honestly! There are times I can't wait for him to go back to Dallas, usually when we're fighting about plans for the wing."
He couldn't help a smile from growing on his face and Kyle echoed it. "And there are other days, like today...seeing him with my family, looking like he belongs there-" Luke cut off abruptly, not letting the traitorous thought form. He walked out to where the tractor still sat, parts scattered on the ground, and leaned against the cold metal as he set the mug on the hood.
"You wonder what it would be like to have him in your life," Kyle supplied as he joined Luke next to the tractor. "And that's okay. You loved Noah, you always will love him, but it's not a bad thing to think about someone else in that way." He nudged Luke with his shoulder. "You could do a lot worse than a hot neurosurgeon." They both laughed and Luke felt something in his chest ease.
"I don't want to forget Noah," he said quietly when their laughter died down. "And I'm afraid if I let myself fall for someone else, even if it's not Dr. Oliver, I will eventually forget him."
Kyle opened his mouth to respond but the sharp crack of the screen door cut off whatever he meant to say. Both men turned to see the subject of their conversation walking
toward them.
"I'll let you two talk," Kyle said to Luke before quickly returning to the farmhouse.
"What's his problem?" Reid asked as he reached the tractor.
"Nothing, He just..." Luke trailed off, unsure of himself. Ever since the dream last month, and the others like it, Luke's body automatically reacted to the doctor's presence, making him feel jumpy and nervous. "What's up?"
"Katie told me to go looking for you, your mother was worried." Reid rolled his eyes. "I tried to tell her Kyle had probably found you but she she insisted.
Luke, realizing he had been staring intently at the doctor, quickly turned his gaze skyward once more. "Seems we won't ever get through a family dinner without you chasing after me." The bitterness of their first encounter still hung between them like a heavy weight, though with each meeting it grew lighter.
"I don't mind the chase," Reid answered after a moment of tense silence.
Slowly, Luke lowered his eyes and caught Reid's heated gaze with his own. "I'm a fast runner," he returned breathlessly. It was moments like this that had Luke completely confused about his feelings for Reid and his love for Noah. Luke swallowed hard and when he discovered himself a few steps closer to the other man, his subconscious threw an image of Noah to the forefront of his mind like a shield.
"We should get back inside," he stammered, before grabbing his forgotten drink and walking back inside a bit unsteadily.
Reid followed him after a moment, his expression both thoughtful and cautious. Neither man felt the presence just beyond the darkness, watching them with a sharp eye as they returned to the warmth of the house.

So? What do you think? This section will go through a lot of editing, so I'm completely open to suggestions!
