She's on the floor in front of the newly returned television, fiddling with the DVD player. There's just a black screen, despite how many times she pushes the buttons. She has never really gotten the hang of the DVD player.

Patrick was roaming the Barge - it was better than sitting around reading or wondering how long it was going to take before he was assigned again - and spotted Jane struggling with the DVD player.

Well, he might not be a mechanic or an engineer, but he'd certainly handled misbehaving DVD players before, so he headed over to see if there what was up. "Need a hand?"

She turned, looking up to him, and sighed. "I don't know. Are you able to do this?" She poked at the DVD player again and it spat out the disc. Another sigh.

"Most of the time, sure," he said, shrugging slightly before dropping down next to Jane. He removed the disk, studied it, shrugged again and fed it back into the player. The tray slid shut, stopped for a moment, and then opened again. "Huh."

It was very difficult for Jane not to feel a little vindicated at that. She looked down to the Indiana Jones DVD and then back up to him. "Did you fix it?" There was a teasing, not quite taunting, tone to her words.

"Apparently not," he said drily, a small, mostly amused smile indicating he wasn't actually bothered by the teasing. "Here, take the DVD-" He took it back out of the tray and handed it over to Jane, taking the player itself and settling in his lap. "Got a paperclip or something?"

"A what?" She tilted her head to the side and stared at him for a moment. But she did take the DVD carefully, as she knew now how to handle them, and sat down fully to watch him.

"A paperclip. You know, small, thin metal thing to hold pieces of paper together?" It had kind of been a long shot, anyway. He wasn't sure anyone he knew just carried paperclips around with them.

He fished into his pocket for a pen instead, hoping it would do the job and took off the cap with his teeth, flipping the DVD tray open to find the reset button.

She watched, entranced, as he seemed to be so intimately familiar with the DVD player. Leaning over, she tried to see exactly what he was doing. "What is that?" She pointed to the hole he was attempting to put the pen through.

"There's kinda like a system override," he said, holding it at an angle so she could see better, pointing to it with the pen. "It's usually for when the tray won't open, but one time, the one in our office was doin' this, and my girlfriend, Angie, just hit the reset button, turned the power off, turned it on again and it worked fine. Figured it's worth a shot, yeah?"

She shrugged. What did she know about such things? But he seemed like he had it under control. "So that will fix it? Does everything have that button?"

"Most things with a disc drive like this, yeah," he said, readjusting the DVD player and carefully triggering the reset. The tray popped open again, as expected, and he closed it again, waited a second, pressed the power button once, waited again, and pressed it once more to turn it back on. The drive stayed closed.

"Alright. Wanna give it another shot?"

She watched in fascination before realizing that he had asked her a question. Blinking, she absently handed him the disc and eyed the machine warily.

"You try."

He carefully replaced the took the disc before pressing the button to pop open the disk tray again and inserted it, before pressing the play button.

They were rewarded with the previews immediately firing up, and Patrick smiled a little crookedly, pleased it had actually worked.

"There we go."

Jane looked somewhat impressed, which was actually very rare for her. "Thank you." It even sounded odd for her to say that. But, he had helped her, which she appreciated.

Especially since it was Indiana Jones she wanted to watch.
