Over the past couple of days, the petshop had had a noticeable sense of anxiousness about it; the animals weren't angry or vicious, just acutely aware of a strange presence that had remained for longer than D tended to tolerate in non-animal guests. More than one of the larger creatures had offered to eat her if she was outstaying her welcome - more out of loyalty to D than offence over their visitor - but he had simply calmed them and chosen to let her recover more or less in peace, only visiting to bring food and the like to the suite of rooms that the shop had thoughtfully provided for her.
As the weekend arrived, though, it felt best to have a conversation, especially since her disappearance had not gone unnoticed. He brought a little food with him when he went to the door and tapped lightly.
"My lady," he said to the closed door, speaking in accentless Nahautl. "May I come in?"
