The Doctor was there. This incarnation, anyway. He had a stack of playing cards that he'd assembled into a card castle and a book open that he was glancing through.

He looked to Howie as he came in and gave him a wave of his hat, before motioning him over.

Elle followed Howie to the library, trying to look nonchalant in spite of the fact that she was half-convinced this whole getting-her-memories-back thing was the worst decision she'd made in her life.

She walked over to the Doctor without waiting for Howie and asked, "So how's this work, Doc?"

"Quite simp-" he glanced to the side as his neatly stacked cards toppled. Stared. Decided to ignore it. "Quite simple really. Our telepathy is a more active sort that doesn't usually read surface thoughts outside of intention. Once I touch you, consider your brain something like a computer, and I am a user. Some people can password protect their memories, but being that neither of you are telepathic if you start to remember something you don't want me to see, you're going to have to say 'no'. I'll not intrude."

He stood and pulled up a chair for Howie to sit across from him. "It might be a little unusual to have someone thinking for you. Not many people can talk back at me, but a good solid refusal comes across clearly most of the time. Were you wanting me to hide something first?"

Elle bit her lip and glanced back and forth between the two men, observing them. The thought of having someone using her brain like a computer was not a pleasant one, but she trusted Howie to know whether would turn out alright.

"You'll have control. She will know what I'm referring to." He looked to Elle. "You know how if you call a help desk and they patch into your computer to fix a dilemma, and you both may manoeuvre the mouse? More along those lines." And back to Howie. "And it won't hurt. I'll stop at the first hint of resistance. It's extremely bad manners to pressure someone into psychic distress."

Elle looked at Howie when he glanced at her, but didn't answer his question. When the Doctor addressed her, she responded with a simple, "Yeah." She'd never actually called a help desk, or had her own computer for that matter, but she got the gist.

"What specific concerns is it that you have?" He looked at her curiously, wondering if there was something that he didn't know about or Howie hadn't told him.

"My memories are mine, that's all," Elle said, once again ignoring Howie's question and responding to the Doctor. She didn't really feel comfortable discussing what she did or didn't trust. "I want proof that when this is over, I'll be the only person who knows what's in my head. So." She waved her hand at him. "Get on with it."

I'm so sorry for the slow. dominie January 31 2011, 07:05:52 UTC
"They are assuredly yours." He agreed. "I guarantee you, Miss. I've little intent to pry. While taking a man at his word is one thing, I've suffered my own memories to be torn out of my head and my mind mangled more than once. Such a thing takes a good deal of time to recover from, and I would only handle someone else's thoughts as delicately as possible." Physically taking them places to confront their history? That was a different story. But that wasn't an option on the Barge.

"I've been forced to forget things as well. And the times that I do recall forgetting I only remember that I forgot because I left myself clues if necessity arises."

Elle nodded. "Sounds peachy. Let's do this demonstration." She didn't really know the Doctor, and didn't trust him at his word, but if Howie did, and if Howie said the Doctor's powers really worked, she'd trust Howie.
