She was charged with talking to one person a week, and so she decided that now was as good a time as any to get that over. Elphaba approached the little man who seemed to be busy doing something and said, "What are you doing?"

The Doctor had settled down on the steps to work on a scanner of some sort (for all anyone knew, it could be a jelly baby detector. He did like to go on object hunts through the Barge). He looked up at the- oh! Green woman! Hello! Bright smile.

"Trying to adjust the photon flow through the third fiberoptic conduit. What are you doing?"

"...what?" Not a word out of that man's mouth made a bit of sense after the word 'the', at least not in the first sentence. She had no idea what a photon or fiberoptic or conduit was. As for what she was doing, she couldn't very well say her warden was making her make conversation with people, or else it would possibly end the conversation right there. "I'm asking questions, clearly."

He chuckled. "Nevermind. It's not very important. I'm just passing the time." He was at least aware of who she was, but he wasn't the type to judge. After all, people that set themselves up to go by heresay were usually bound by their misconceptions.

"I'm fond of questions myself." He was tempted to flash his pullover sweater at her. Thankfully he had the sense to restrain himself.

"I'm fonder of answers," she replied, before deciding she might as well ensure she got his name. "Who are you, anyway?"

"Oh, then ask away. I can't promise they won't be a tad confusing. I'm Dr. John Smith." The name was coming to grow on him more and more recently. He offered her his hand to shake.

"I'm Elphaba," she said, shaking his hand. Her grip was strong and slightly bony, but brief and with a quick release. "So what does...doing the thing you're doing...what is it's purpose? Aside from passing time."

"It's a scanner. And unfortunately it is mostly passing time. I get bored, sometimes. Actually a lot of times, here." He folds his arms over his knees and sort of sneers up the stairwell unpleasantly.

"So do I. There's simply not much that needs to be done here. My warden talked about getting me a job, but it doesn't seem like a particularly unpleasant idea." The needing to be friendly to people was the unpleasant part.

"What sort of job do you think you would prefer?" He asked, swivelling on the step to better face her, and dropping the too large scanner into a pocket where it seemed like it vanished.

"Infirmary. It's the one I'd have the most experience with. What about you? If you had a job other than being a warden."

"I volunteer at the infirmary. Most of the workers there are quite interesting." Not all of them "nice", but interesting usually was the more important part. At the very least they were entertaining.

"Oh? Are there any openings at the moment?"

"They always need help. There's rarely enough doctors on staff, so it would be welcomed." He nodded. "You helped people, before?"

"I have, a long time ago. Also I studied Life Sciences at the Shiz, and was able to surgically attach functioning wings to monkeys, so I think I'm more qualified than most in that infirmary. I'll have to let my warden know."

"...That's impressive."

And vaguely surprising. He didn't envy the monkeys. He was vaguely reminded of the Rani, but not in a terrible way.

"Like the monkey that stole your communicator?"
