Well yesterday was the big day, and it was crazy, but we made it! So, just what went down? Let me tell you...
Getting ready was crazy. I had to meet at the Metro station earlier with the other officers, and it seemed like no matter how early I got up, I was still frantically trying to get out the door. My mom went with me to the station, where I saw met with the most of the officers. We rode the Metro, then, after walking not too far, my godmother found where we were, and gave us all a ride in the van that she had borrowed for the day... that's all eight of us officers, plus my mom in the front seat. Craziness. Yeah, so she drove us the rest of the way there, and in the time leading up to the ceremony, everyone was a bundle of nerves... officers, performers, the rest of the class... it was crazy to think that after so much waiting, the day had finally arrived. I myself had never felt so nervous in such a long time, and this time, it was everything. Then, when all officers were in one place, Ms. Phelps and Mr. Austin gave us gifts that they had lovingly prepared for all of us, and it was so touching, it really was. None of us expected it, but we all appreciated the thought that went into them. Finally, after final adjustments of caps and gowns, it was time for the lineup. It was the moment that had arrived...
Walking in to the tune of "Pomp and Circumstance" was so exhilarating, along with the cheers of hundreds of people standing at their seats, but as soon as I made it to my place on the stage, it was the same feelings of nervousness and excitement and anxiety and who-knows-what, all at once. Thrilling. In all, the whole ceremony was beautiful. When it came time for me to give my speech, my heart was pounding. My speech to introduce Mr. Austin, one of the greatest guys on this planet, was the hardest speech I ever had to give, but I got through it. But, basically, everything was great. The two performances were moving, just like we knew they would be, and Mr. Hobson was an amazing speaker. He really connected to us, and delivered a wonderful message. The best part of the whole thing was finally walking across that stage, as people cheered me on... how surreal... I knew I would graduate, but there was still this small part... well, shaking all those hands and giving hugs sure made it more real. Before I knew it, it was all over, and the graduates of the Class of 2006 began filing out of DAR. It was official: we graduated!!!
Outside, a flurry of hugs, photos, greetings, and people. As much as I scrambled, I got lost and didn't get to my diploma on time... now I have to still get it somehow... Anyways, I found my family, and took lots of pictures, and still managed pictures with some friends. Then, we went out to eat at a Spanish restaurant that, oddly enough, served Mexican food as well. I was still wearing my gown inside, so random people would congratulate me, LOL. Then, we made the long journey home, prayed a rosary for giving thanks to the Lord for bringing me to my successful completion of school, and that was it. My day ended.
Seniors: We did it! It's great to finally be over, but sad at the same time to have to say goodbye to so many friends and teachers and the traditions of Magruder. Never forget the good times throughout high school, and even before. Keep in touch with the friends that you made, because you just never know when you will stop seeing them... at least for months on end.
It's been great... I'm gonna miss you all... Thanks for the memories, '06...
God bless.
