Marauders-Era Hogwarts Students

Oct 02, 2006 23:10

The following is a comprehensive list of all characters who attended or may have attended Hogwarts during the Marauders' school years (ie, those born between 1 September 1953 and 31 August 1966). This list is based on Harry Potter canon, and on information taken from the HP Lexicon. If any of this information is in error, or if anyone is missing ( Read more... )

Thanks, this looks like a great resource!

One nitpick: I know the Lexicon timeline gives 1960 as the birthdate for MWPP, and a lot of fans follow this, but I think it's probably a year too late. JKR says that Snape is "35 or 36" at the time of GoF (presumably, he was 35 at the beginning of the year and 36 at the end of it, since his birthday is in January), while Sirius was "around 22" when he went to Azkaban. Both of these figures would imply birthdates between September 1958 and August 1959 for the MWPP generation.

I don't doubt you're right, but I am too tired to do the math at the moment. *zonk*

I've had a look and what the Lexicon has to say on the Marauders' ages, and I've nudged things around a bit on here. Most canon evidence, and nearly everything JKR has said has suggested that the Marauders were born between 1 Sep 1959 and 31 August 1960, so I'm going to go with that. JKR is never very good at being consistent in her timelines.

Oh, look! Turns out I was right after all. I guess that'll teach me to cave to peer pressure.

No, I'm pretty sure he was a muggleborn.

No prob. I can understand the confusion. I thought he was a muggle for a while as well.

You are very welcome! I'm a detail-oriented geek, and I have to make sure I have everything *just right* with canon before I can write. I am upset that I did not do this at the start, since I originally wrote Bellatrix as being at school with the Marauders and dating/using Peter.

I read up the little essay on the Marauders' ages, and it sounds like there's conflicting information out there. JKR is a bit vague and not at all consistent in her timelines, so I think I'll stick with this, but if anyone else wants to use the other information, that's up to them. I'll add in a link, though, just so people know there's conflict.

And thanks for noticing the Lestrange typo. I cut and pasted the wrong brother. Guess I wasn't paying attention.

But surely "35 or 36" means he was either 35 or 36 in the book, but not necessarily both. If his birthday is in January, and he turned 35, then that qualifies him as being "35 or 36" in GoF. She was approximating, not suggesting that he turned 36 during that year. I doubt she had the timeline in front of her when she said it ( ... )

The way I see it, I want the earliest possible date for the Marauders as possible because that gives them THAT MUCH MORE TIME to be happy. :D (I am, of course, a gigantic sap.)

I will now be running away with this wonderful, helpful, fantastic list of yours.

Thank you.

*grin* You're welcome! They do deserve a little more joy than they got, don't they? But angst is fun, too, and tragedy makes for interesting story telling
