So I'd decided that I definitely wanted to dye my hair blue black. It's only a small thing but I really think it would just completely change the look of the whole costume (for the better :P).
Anywho so I was down in the village posting stuff and decided to check out the two hair salons and get a quote on dyeing my hair. Unfortunately one of them was closed (the one that Matt recommended too!); the other one quoted me $90 for the dye and a haircut ($80 without the haircut). Hmmm... and the earliest they could fit me in was Thursday morning, which I'm a bit iffy about as I like to allow a few days for my hair to go back to normal (dye makes it kinda frizzy). so yeah I'm thinking thats a no both on the time factor and the cost. I just don't think I can afford that kind of money after paying for airfares, accomodation and food. Blah. I'll still check the other salon tomorrow and see what price they quote, if it's cheaper and they can fit me in, then maybe. It just really sucks because I had my heart set on having the proper blue black hair for the debut of my costume! I'll have a chat with Matt about it, see if I can't find a way to afford it... it's just a lot of money right now.
And yes I know, my hair is already perfect for it, but I dunno, there's just something about the blue black hair that I think would really lift the costume from being a good costume to being a great costume! I really should have looked into it earlier though....
[Edit] Just talked to Matt and he offered to pay for half of getting my hair done, so it looks like I'm getting it done! Wooo! I'm going to ring them up and book in for Thursday morning. I'm going to ask them if they could please not blow dry it, that's usually when my hair gets all fluffy and frizzy. I'll probably wash it Thursday night anyway, so I can let it dry naturally into it's normal curls. Though I might also put some extra curls in there with my curling iron. I wish I could get it done before Thursday, but that's the only spot they have :( I'm just aware that the last few times I've had my hair dyed for the first couple of days after dyeing it loses it's natural curl because it's too soft and fluffy to hold it properly. so I might have to wash it when I get home from the salon, and not wash it for the rest of the weekend. But I do have some curling creme that I can try and my curling iron as a back up. Wooo! Very excited!
Oh and I pulled out the navy linen from my stash. I thought I only had about 2m but it turns out I have about 5 or 6m, so there should be plenty in there for the WW hooded cloak. It's also really lightweight; almost like the hanky linen that I used for my jedi tunic, but with a little more substance so it actually doesn't crush like that did. It's beautiful and soft and I think it will be perfect for her cape. It has a nice drape, but shouldn't be too heavy. So now i have to work out what kind of shape I want for it. I'm thinking either a 1/2 or 3/4 cape? I want it to be full enough to go all the way around my shoulders but not too full that it's heavy. At this stage I think I'll leave it plain blue, and maybe add trim later on. While I'm at Spotlight tomorrow I'll have a looksie at their jewellery section, hopefully I can find a suitable brooch base for the cloak pin. From what I can tell it's just a round pin with a circle on it. If I can just find a round base, I can cover it with the adhesive film so it will match my other pieces.
And for reference,
here is a shot of the cape. It's the cover of one of the comics. Though in the actual comic it's a royal blue colour, not the taupe on the cover. But it gives a good idea of the shape (I love how it drapes around her shoulders) and shows the pin. The pin isn't shown in any of the inside shots unfortunately. In some of the inside shots, she's shown with it very much looking like a cowl around her neck, so it needs to be able to drape nicely around the front of her neck. Lengthwise, it goes to about her ankles, but it's hard to tell because in most of the shots it's being tossed around dramatically in the wind :P She doens't actually have a hood, but I'd like to add one to mine. I'm thinking a nice deep hood, like the one on my jedi robe. Good for hiding in :P It's all going to be unlined (learnt my lesson ont he jedi robe though that linen is very weighty) so I'll see if I can get some binding in the right colour at spotlight. Also I LOVE her shield and would love to make it at some stage.
