but first,
how about that GenCon report?
Con had some serious ups and downs.
The major down was that I was sick the entire fucking time. I was feeling sick and headachey when I went to pick Mike up, but he gave me food and we drove to Indianapolis without incident. (70 mph speed limit on the freeway, I love you a lot.) Am now feeling more confident that I can survive road trips, which is good! I was kind of petrified of them before, at least in the sense of me actually driving.
But yeah, anyway. So we arrive, and Mike starts playing Legend of Zelda on my DS, and I write a little bit of Kain voyeurism fic. Other people show up. Plans are made for the next day.
Thursday, I wake up sick. naturally. Not sneezy-cold sick, no no. Nauseous. AWESOME! I get my shit together nonetheless, choke down some breakfast because I know I need fuel, and we get in the car. Adventures in finding a parking garage commence; we find one, and then nearly have a heart attack because the space we start to pull into has a perfectly still pool of water, and ALL of us saw the reflections in it and thought there was seriously a drop-off in the middle of the parking space. THAT was a little surreal.
We have badges, and we go to meet
celeloriel and
adamjury, both of whom I located by the following method: 1) look for Catalyst booth; 2) look for the guy with the mohawk in a kilt. Very effective strategy. Introductions being made, we go about our day, which includes playing a game of Star Wars Revised. Our GM is not the greatest; she wasn't familiar enough with the rules, nor with the adventure, and had no capacity to wing it when her players tried to charge off in a direction that wasn't the planned one. This experience has taught me just how spoiled I am in DCP; all of our GMs are actually pretty fucking awesome. Lesson learned!
We play some Settlers of Catan, which Mike snipes out from under me, the twit. By now I am really not feeling well, and we go out to dinner with Mike D, Piper,
intorporeal, Sarah,
wrenbow,
bobbler, and Paul. Dinner is very tasty. We go home.
Friday, still sick. The highlight of Friday was definitely playing a round of Shadows over Camelot, which I had a grand time with and now really want. Honestly at this point the days of GenCon have started to blur together a lot, and this is largely because I was so freaking sick all weekend. I was pretty much constantly nauseous, didn't want to eat ANYTHING, made myself eat things because I knew I needed calories which resulted in more nausea, repeat repeat repeat. In retrospect, I am guessing that part of the problem came from low blood sugar on Wednesday and perpetuated itself through the rest of the con, because my body apparently can't get its signals straight and just makes me feel nauseous when what it means is "hey you dumb bint stop and eat something and drink some water." NEWS FLASH, stupid meat sack: if you make me feel sick, I won't eat!
I played some really good games, like the Game of Thrones card game, and made do-want faces at Cthulhu Tech, and wibbled over Shadowrun 4th ed rather a lot. A lot of the demos I played weren't as cool as I was hoping they'd be, but that's okay. Now I know not to buy them. (BTW, the balance structure on Pirates Cove is BALLS. I lost a battle in the first round and spent the entire rest of teh game trying to claw my way back up, and failing. NOT FUN. Like, I don't even care that I lost, but I was never even in competition and basically just wasting my time after that first round, which is BALLS.)
Swag-wise, I was very well behaved (I think I spent less than $100 on the entire con excluding badge). I got the FF5 OSV, which is the only one I didn't have (it was only $20! Even less than iTunes, I'm pretty sure!) and a Garnet wall scroll for $15. I feel a little silly going to GenCon and coming home with FF swag, but there you go. I also picked up a free copy of High School Drama, which looks really entertaining, and am eyeing a bunch of the stuff being demoed at Catalyst, because it was all NEAT.
Overall, I regret two things: 1) that I was sick so much (
celeloriel informed me at one point that I looked "rather green"), and 2) that I didn't get to spend as much time playing games with my friends. I mean, yeah, con, new games and stuff, and sure I can always hang out with them here--but my favourite thing about ACen has always been palling around with
mithrigil,
puella_nerdii,
mullenkamp,
akatonbo,
red_mage_jerry et al, and I'm not surprised to find that GenCon is no different.
Driving back was an epic wretched BASTARD on I-65, which was annoying because we breezed through I-65 on the way down and were dismissive of the construction issues as a result.
Overall, a good experience. Next year, I want to run Exalted. I want to run Exalted very much. I have at least two story seeds I could gladly run, so maybe I'll do each of them once or twice. lab rats RL-gaming friends beware, for I will need playtesters.
Alright, sleepy cat.
