From my site's feedback form:

"i was checking out the reviews for FF7 and other RPGs for my friend, and i happened to read yours. what were you thinking?Do you think?! all you do is point out the bad things about games, and criticize them negativly for everything. for someone who CLAIMS to adore RPGs, you really don\'t seem to analyze them very well. Your standards are way too high, and you don\'t appear to enjoy game of any kind. I\'m sorry, but as a writer, YOU SUCK. "

Cue me laughing.

My response:

"I am curious exactly which of my reviews you read. I do enjoy games of all kinds, and I do analyze the things I enjoy about a game. See, for example, my reviews of Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy IX.

I do think, and I consider my reviews quite thoroughly before I commit text to screen. I am also curious about your contention that I suck as a writer. Is that because my opinion is different from yours, or because I have technical and stylistic flaws? I rather suspect the former, and can only assume that you take issue with my review of FF7 in particular.

The reason my review for the game is harsh is because I firmly believe it does not live up to the standard of quality previously and subsequently evinced by Square (for example, Final Fantasy IV, VI, Tactics, IX, and X.) Simply put, I just don't like it. There are several games, games in the FF series and otherwise, that I adore. My favourite game is Final Fantasy VI, which I believe to be the pinnacle of RPGs in all aspects save graphics.

I can respect that your opinion differs from mine, but I do object to the insults that you have offered. I respect the opinions of others; I would like the same courtesy extended to myself."

I went back and re-read my FF7 review, out of curiosity. Yeah, I'm pretty harsh. Yeah, I nitpick the entire thing and bitch about everything I don't like. I wonder why that could be? Maybe because I DON'T LIKE THE GAME? yeah, that might be it.

At any rate, I am vastly amused by this email and even more amused by my lack of caring. I suck as a writer? Guess what, sweetpea. I have far better grammar and spelling than you do, which automatically puts me several levels above you on a purely technical basis. Beyond that, four years at Northwestern has honed my ability to assemble data into a coherent argument. So, I suck as a writer? Sorry for the arrogance, but no. I think not.

And now, do I sleep, or do I work on The Great American Novel?

Either way is good, really :)
